I have long had an interest in cinderellas of the George VI period, especially for the Coronation (plus all stamp issues of George VI generally). A while ago, I came across examples of UK cinderella sheets for the Coronation, overprinted in black as shown: and The original issues of eight stamps per sheet were in red, blue or purple (in two different plate forms; the lettering on each stamp either having distinct serifs or not) and I have the red and purple sheets for the USA overprint, plus all three colours for the Canada (all of these with plain lettering). I assume that these were issued, perhaps using surplus sheets left over from the Coronation, for sale in Canada/USA as souvenirs of the Royal Visit in 1939. Has anyone else come across these? I would dearly love to get hold of an example my 'missing' USA blue sheet or of any sheets having seriffed lettering, or indeed to acquire any further copies at all, singles, multiples or sheets of any of them; loose or on cover (or maybe even on a display card issued with them?). Also, has anyone come across these used postally (front or back of envelopes)? Chris Wren (UK)

Ditto.
Seen the original sheets, even bid on them a few times [never sucessful], but never seen the overprints.
Good luck in your search. I'll keep my eyes open for you.

I will scan the other sheets, normal and overprinted and including examples from both plate versions (so that people can see how to tell them apart easily) and post them tomorrow. Chris |

Thank you for the addition. Oddly enough, I have only today bought an example of this very sheet - not even received it yet! I already have the Seagram's Whisky set too, plus the Parkshaw 60 stamp sheet and the Harrison's regalia issue (all six colours), then there is the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire 'coronation seal' plus a few others.... It's all good fun and I have been fortunate to be able to acquire a good selection covering almost all of the George VI cinderellas. Chris |

Also, here are images which show the difference between the two types for this issue: On the left (red), the stamps all have plain lettering, without serifs. On the right (purple), the stamps all have seriffed lettering. These two states or plates (others have designated the plain lettering as 'plate 1' and the serifed as 'plate 2') are known for all three colours. The five overprinted sheets I have are all from plate 1. Chris |

Very interesting thread you have started Chris and welcome to the forum. Yhe M/S all scanned in here are really quite interesting and I too have tried bidding on some but w/o success. I have been lucky on a few though and I too have a Souvenir Sheet exactly the same as that posted by backroads. That sheet came in a large glassine cover for the sheet. I might add that it is a challenge to get separate covers with a sample of each 'cinderella' on it. For the sheet backroads has scanned, I now have 7 covers with a different sample and all I need are 2 more to complete the sheet. Great stuff Chimo Bujutsu |
