I'm scanning, and trying to absorb about .25 of what I read. Will any of you help me with these early India issues.

Just what do you want to know, Barb?

Page 1: On the top row, the ½ Anna blue and 1 Anna brown are known with watermark (elephant's head) inverted; they're worth having.

On the second row, the 6 Anna with watermark inverted is also good. The 9 Pies mauve if in pristine mint/fine used condition would rate £19.

I can't see anything else to get excited about, but postmarks from the Victoria/Edward VII era can add value. Indian stamps were used in all sorts of odd places: Aden, the Persian Gulf, Zanzibar, Nepal and Tibet amongst others, and some postmarks from military campaigns in odd corners of the Empire, like Hunza, can also be useful.

The last row on the second page are Service (government use) stamps. The 1 Anna brown-purple is also known with a blue-black overprint, instead of plain black (£180 used) and with watermark inverted (£800 used).

your friendly neighbourhood spock is here :)

ask away.

all of these issues are worth having. they might not make you rich unless you have some rare varieties. but look for the scinde dawk see if that is also lying around somewhere that is a monster stamp.

Tony has tried to help out with some thoughts but I think what you should do is post one stamp at a time with the watermarks might be a painful exercise that doesnt get you anything or it might get you excited but remember rare stamps are rare for a reason :)

Hope this helps :)

Is that some sort of two headed dragon?

I'll thank you both, and start individually scanning. Seriously - I don't think there are any scinde dawk ... :) but I'd like it if there were.
