Went through my Austrian stamps today. Found some interesting postmarks.

A perfect fit. Not sure if from the same cover, but most likely from the same cancel.

Two from Constantinople. Not exactly within the empire (offices abroad).

The question is: Why one says Austrian Post, another one doesn't?

I thought at first it might be Oberleitendorf, Styria (Steiermark) but there is one extra letter at the L of
STEMPEL which doesn't fit.

Hi danko and lithograving,

I'd guess it's "Oberleitensdorf" which may be an old spelling of "Oberleutensdorf" in Bohemia (now Litvinov in the Czech Republic).

I showed the postcard with this strike in another thread, but the cancel belongs here.

This thread could use a bump. We have lots of newer members who may never have seen it.

Neumarktl, now Trzic, Slovenia:

Ervenik, Croatia:

Not far-flung at all, this is an oval Recommandirt cancel for Wieden in Wien, practically downtown Vienna. Wieden is one of the "districts" of Vienna, and this would be a recorded delivery, or registered, piece:

Gents - thanks for sharing all those fantastic items - I love them all
Edit: CNJ - thanks for bumping this interesting thread

I am currently working on a load of classical Austrian stamps, and I am trying to identify which were cancelled in the empire outside Austria itself. ( I am building separate collections of such forerunners for various countries). I found quite a few so far, example this one from a quite a small post office:

Wikipedia: "Da#269;ice (Czech pronunciation: [#712;dat#643;#618;ts#603;]; German: Datschitz) is a town in southwestern Moravia, currently belonging to the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has cca 8,000 inhabitants. It is notable as the home of the sugar cube, which was invented there in 1843 by Jakub Kryštof Rad."

A question for you good people sharing the same interest:
I am not able to find any index / overview of post offices / postmarks off the Austrian Empire. I have seen this online somewhere at some point, but now I am not able to find any...
Can anyone please guide me where I will find such reference?

Thanks for helping,
Jon

There is plenty of information on the internet about Austro-Hungarian towns. Over the next few days when I have more access to my data, I will post some links, although others may chime in before that.

BeeSee - Thanks for your kind feedback, I am looking forward to some good links!

And yepp, I do find all kinds of information by google, but it's difficult to search for place names when e.g. the the first few letters of a postmark is missing. If I find a decent list of all postmarks, I will build the list into an excel sheet, which will then be searchable for only fragments of the place names. I have done this already for Turkey, India and others, and it's proven to be very time-saving. And such an excel sheet will also be independant of an internet connection - my internet connection when at work offshore is very much on and off...
