Here is a good Wikipedia link for all German place name is Europe, which is searchable with partial names, as from partial cancels. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...rman_exonyms Quote: Any interest in postmarks from French Empire, British Empire, Ottoman Empire or India? That's what I have got in excel so far... Sure, I have like to hoard anything on postmarks in my philatelic digital library, even if I don't directly collect the area . |

BeeSee - thanks for the link That could be useful, still not exactly what I am looking for. Guess I could subtract all the names into a searchable database, but that would take some time... and still it does probably not cover place names for towns that did not have separate German names in parts of the empire like Ukraine, Romania etc? I have seen somewhere a search tool that was already made for Austrian postmarks, however I was not smart enough to save that link for this day Regarding exchange of excel files - I have sent you a personal mail Jon Jon |

BeeSee - yesterday I found another web source for postmarks of the Austrian empire postmarks - http://worldpostmarks.net/CountryLinks.htm . Excellent site! I combined data from that source with the list of place names you suggested in your post yesterday. This resulted in a searchable database in excel, containing almost 11 000 entries for searching. This database can easily be searched for bi-lingual place names or for only fragments of names. However the Austrian Empire was enormous, so the list is probably incomplete. I have already found some stamps with postmarks I am not able to match in the database , but the file is a starting point at least I sent the new Austrian database to you along with 5 other postmark databases, hope it is useful for your need. Thanks for that link Jon! I had not seen it - yes excellent site. Also thanks for the Excel sheets you sent. Absolutely fantastic and well laid out. They will go well with the Austro-Hungarian Empire map I am drawing in AutoCad. I will send you a personal email shortly. |

I checked Przemysl on Wikipedia, and it is a very interesting town, especially during World War I, where part of it was under Western Ukraine control for a short while. |

Yes, that fits, Ollmutz - now Olomouc in the Czech Republic. I have also seen it spelled Olmutz with one L. |

asmodeus - - thanks a lot, well done enchifring that! I can see it very clearly now that you solved the mystery BeeSee - I have another one I am struggling on...: Could it be Cattaro (Kotor), Austrian Dalmatia, present day Montenegro? (22/2/1870) This is the only match I get in my database (for the 4-letter string 'taro'). Does this make sense? Have no clue what '..ecomm.' is? |

I agree Blaamand, Cattaro. I think the bottom is an abreviation for Recommande, the U.P.U. (French) word for Registered. |

BeeSee- thank you for your support as always! 'Recomm' - off course, how could I miss it... I was thinking (tel)ecomm - but I realised it made no sense on a stamp in 1870... |

Istamp - The postmark can be (Leopo)oldsta(dt) - Austria It could potentially also be Lipótváros (Leopoldstadt), a neighborhood in Budapest. Nice flaw in the UL frame |
