Nice SON on this stamp but I am not a worldwide collector so know very little. It has 9 in light penil on the back . Any info qould be appreciated. Noticed top and bottom horizontal lines look like either an engravers fix or a slip.

9 would be a Scott number for the 2c dull rose. The corresponding number for SG is 28. Both list a variety, "9a" or "28a" in rose. It was issued in 1880, much later than many others of this design. There are a surprising number of forgeries of early Hong Kong.

Scott catalogue for used is right around $30 for each variety.

This came from an inherited collection and not off of ebay so I'm confident. This was another bonus stamp that came along with a canadian collection I purchased. Now I have to figure what I can get from the bonus stamps to offset the rest.

Actually, given the CDS is dated '98, I'd suspect it's probably the Crown CA watermark, SG 32 or 33. This stamp is normally perf 14, but there's a rare (£75,000 used) perf 12 variety, and inverted and reversed watermarks known also (£140 - £500). Definitely worth a closer look!

Hi Nitrolures and all
Just to show you the variations in colour of the two cents, it is amazing. Also some other Queen Vic Hong Kong
I have left them on the paper as I too have heard there are a lot of forgeries going around
Regards
Horamakhet

Wow my eyes wern't opened and I got all excited with perf 14 until I re read I was hopin for perf 12. Still some paper on back so can't really make out watermark. Thanks for the brief excitement.

Yes, I would definitely not assume that the "9" on the back is or was a correct identification. It's ridiculous how often they're wrong. Always double check...

Hope springs eternal ... I'd like a dollar for each time I've had to (gently) deflate the hopes of ebay and other sellers about Indian States stamps. Sellers so often take the approach that, if there are two catalogue possibilities, their copy must be the good one.

Come to think of it, when I'm cataloguing new acquisitions, I tend to assume mine is the good one - until I disprove it
