I have a 6d red Transvaal that I believe is BOB (I could be wrong) but I don't have my GB Scott catalog. Does anyone know a Scott ID for this and a near value. (The mortgage on the house is coming due). Thanks as always. - Jeff

jhlovell, I just noticed the following notation under # 164:
"Counterfeits of No. 164 are on the 6p dark red revenue stamp of 1898 and have a shiny green ink from the overprint. The false overprint is also found on other revenue denominations, though only the 6p rose was converted to postal use."

Now looking at your copy, it appears that it is possibly dark red because the copy in the Scott catalogue looks paler and is the rose color.

This is an interesting stamp, even though relatively common.

It was a revenue stamp that was converted to a regular postage stamp.

Counterfeits abound, even though not a rare stamp. I believe the Scott catalog should have a footnote explaining how to detect the counterfeit.

khj, I have noticed often that members of SCF are fast answering questions and if you are somewhat slow in responding, someone will likely beat you to the answer. If you snooze you loose.

The overprint is green for both genuine and counterfeit overprints. On the counterfeits, it is a "shiny" green. Also, the counterfeit overprints were made on the wrong revenue stamp. Genuine overprints were made on rose colored revenue stamp. Counterfeit overprints were made on same revenue stamp of dark red color variety.
