Fifia: are you able to provide a larger image of your Heidelberg stamp? When I was a "yute" (from one of my favourite movies - My Cousin Vinny) I spent some time there. I remember they had a "lighting of the candles" ceremony where they floated candles down the river in the evening. An absolutely spectacular scene as they bobbed along.

Edit: Fifia -ignore my request. I found a larger one on Wiki.

The Enkaku-ji temple in Okinawa was built in 1492-95 by King Sho Shin (1465–1526). It was the head temple of the Rinzai Buddhist sect in the Kingdom of Ryukyu. The original temple was destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II, but was restored in 1968. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the Enkaku-ji temple's main gate, engraved and photogravure, issued by Ryukyu Islands on July 15, 1968, Scott No. 171, plus a photo of the restored gate.

Fifia: thanks for your kind offer, however, a few years ago I decided that I had more than enough stamps to keep me busy given my age so decided not to collect anymore. I will also soon have to decide what to do with my collection. A few years back I was involved in cleaning out the houses of friends who had died. I wasn't executor in these estates but did the heavy lifting in cleaning out the houses. I made a decision then to get rid of as much of my own "stuff" (a word from a great George Carlin comedy skit) as I could as the years went by and I have slowly done so. It is absolutely amazing what one accumulates in a lifetime. The scans are all I need to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of those German line engravings. I enjoy the images you put on here and your avatar brightens up every thread.

Rome
On the via Nomentana, 349 n. is the Basilica of s. Agnese fuori le Mura.

The Church was erected in 342 by Constance, daughter or niece of Constantine, above the cemetery area that received the remains of the Saint. Is one of the most intact of the Christian basilica of Byzantine influence now preserved in Rome.

In a hour the scans will be straight....that is when I have my first beer!

cynical,
thank you for your kind words. I know what you mean.
Too much stuff everywhere. One of these days I will do the same.
I think I just move with what I like to hang on to!
In the meantime I look at stamps and enjoy what I have...
Most of the stamps I have I inherited. I made two purchases of stamps I liked.

The column is a traditional monument in honor of the great military victories. In the bicentennial year of the victory over Napoleon, I'll talk about the Alexander Column St Petersburg.

The famous Alexander Column - a monument dedicated to the victory of Russia in the The Patriotic War of 1812. It is named in honor of Russian Emperor-the Winner Alexander l and installed in the Palace Square in St. Petersburg.
Put forward the idea of building a monument architect Carlo Rossi.
Emperor Nicholas l

wish that a monument in honor of his older brother

like a column of Trajan in Rome,

and was higher than the Vendome column of Napoleon in Paris.

This project was realized by another great architect Auguste Montferrand.

Auguste Montferrand - author of the grand St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

The column was fabricated from a solid piece of red granite, which is found near the town of Vyborg.

The way the device technology is the foundation and lifting columns have been suggested by Lieutenant-General A.A.Betankur, spanish engineer in Russian service,

architect and organized the transport of education in Russia.
Previously, using similar technology laid the foundation and put the columns of St. Isaac's Cathedral.
August 30, 1832 column for the 2:00 set in the vertical position of the 2,000 soldiers and 400 workers.

At the top of the column was set figure of an angel with a cross, and the base is decorated with bas-reliefs of ancient arms and allegorical figures symbolizing the victory over Napoleon

and the liberation of the peoples of Europe.

The Puerta de Toledo (Gate of Toledo) in Ciudad Real, Spain is a magnificent example of military architecture of the 14th century. The gate, which is now a National Monument, leads to the road going to the city of Toledo. The architecture is Mudéjar, a style of Iberian architecture and decoration, particularly of Aragon and Castile, of the 12th to 16th centuries, strongly influenced by Moorish taste and workmanship. It is the only gate that remains of the fortifications that King Alfonso X ordered to be constructed in Ciudad Real, and which were eventually completed during the reign of King Alfonso XI (1311-1350). Here is an image of an engraved stamp depicting the Puerta de Toledo issued by Spain on June 24, 1977, Scott No. 2045, plus a photo of the gate.
