Yes, I know, these stamps are almost always found with the roller cancel that masks the stamp. I'm very happy with the perfectly clear CDS on the 63. I'm still missing the 65......

Diamond Jubilee : I have from #50 to #60 and none from #61 to #65.

I hope to put my hands on them... quite expensive... unless a possible exchange...

The enveloppe was stamped on Dec 8, 1874 and the letter was written on Nov 8, 1874, exactly one month earlier

Following is the letter that was in the enveloppe...

Koala:
Unfortunately, there is no conclusive way to prove that letter was originally sent in that envelope. People would often keep an entire correspondence, and, over a hundred years, letters could get swapped.

Actually, I think that letter is also dated Dec 8 - compare the first letter of the date with the first letter in "Dear" in the salutation.

I never even looked at the date on the letter - just took the comment at face value. Now that Zuzu brings it up, the first letter of the date is probably a "D," as it is a match for the salutation. With the same dates, my earlier comment is rendered moot (but not mute).

I agree for the letter dated on Dec 8...

Possibilities without concluding to fast: a doubt in CHIPG assumption

1. it's also possible that the letter never got swapped over the years, meaning this letter was effectively in the envelope through all these years

2. also, this letter was mailed from Ste-Catherines, Ontario to what I believe is Wellington (???), Ontario.
When Googled, from Ste-Catherines to Wellington County (somewhere in the County), there are 149 Km (92.5 miles).
Let pretend that the mail delivery was done on a horse, it is possible this letter might have been delivered the same day, something like leaving early in the morning and received sometime on the same day, at the Wellington (??), Ont Post Office

We may also doubt that the letter might have been swapped from an envelope to another. One thing is certain, we have here the same person who wrote the letter and the address on the envelope and a doubt that the letter did not get swapped...OUF

I do believe this letter has always been in this envelope. The envelope was kept "as is" all this time until...somebody discover it, put it on ebay, I won it and I share it with you guys

Green horn here. Why is the 3 cent stamp marked/stamped 2 cents?
