The Battle of Kadesh (also Qadesh) took place between the forces of the Egyptian Empire under Pharaoh Ramesses II and the Hittite Empire under Muwatalli II at the city of Kadesh on the Orontes River, in what is now the Syrian Arab Republic. The battle is generally dated to 1274 BC, and is the earliest battle in recorded history for which details of tactics and formations are known. It was probably the largest chariot battle ever fought, involving perhaps 5,000-6,000 chariots. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a fresco at the Abu Simbel temple showing Ramesses II fighting in his chariot at the battle, engraved by Jacques Combet, and issued by France on September 4, 1976, Scott No 1467, Y&T No. 1899.

Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832) was a French scholar, philologist and orientalist who in 1822 published the first translation of the Rosetta Stone hieroglyphs, showing that the ancient Egyptian writing system was a combination of phonetic and ideographic signs. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Champollion and depicting hieroglyphs and monuments, designed by Pierrette Lambert, engraved by Pierre Albuisson, and issued by Monaco on September 4, 1990 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Champollion's birth, Scott No. 1733, plus a detail from an 1821 painted portrait of Jean-François Champollion by French artist Léon Cogniet (1794-1880) which may have been a model for this stamp's design.
