Colette was the surname of the French novelist and performer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (1873-1954). She is best known for her novel Gigi, upon which Lerner and Loewe based the stage and film musical comedies of the same title. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Colette, designed and engraved by Czeslaw Slania, and issued by Monaco as one of eight stamps in a "famous people" souvenir sheet on May 14, 1996, Scott No. 199g, plus a photo of Colette in her somewhat younger years. - nethryk |

Of cousre....Edward Stanley Gibbons. I've been wracking my brains (the little I have left) searching for the "Author" 22crows, your knowledge is truly amazing. Is there anything you don't know? And Rod...what can I say. You are one of the mainstays of this community. Your informative and witty posts make this more than a mere stamp forum but a place to spend many enjoyable hours. Actually the wife says too many wasted hours. |

If anyone is interested, I have ten pages typewritten list of "Literature on Stamps" I can scan to a pdf copy and email to anyone who may be interested.
It is listed by Scott Numbers by Country, and I am fairly certain, no longer complete, but will be happy to share with those looking for international checklist.

Here is an image of a semi-postal stamp honoring Valentin Louis Georges Eugène Marcel Proust, a French novelist, critic, and essayist best known for his monumental À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time), which was published in seven parts between 1913 and 1927. This stamp features a portrait of Proust and a view of the Saint-Hilaire bridge over the Loir river at Illiers-Combray. The stamp was designed and engraved by Jean Pheulpin, and issued by France on February 12, 1966, Scott No. B396, Y&T No. 1472. - nethryk |

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German writer, pictorial artist, biologist, theoretical physicist, and polymath. He is considered the supreme genius of modern German literature. Here is an image of a semi-postal stamp designed after a detail from a famous portrait of Goethe as a traveler in the Roman Campagna (1787) by German painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751-1828), printed by lithogravure, and issued by East Germany (DDR) on July 20, 1949 for the 300th anniversary of Goethe's birth, Scott No. 10NB7, Michel No. 235, plus a photo of Tischbein's painting.. - nethryk |
