Happy Birthday to Lithuanian/Samogitian writer, ethnographer and prose historian Simonas Daukantas (1793-1864). As one of the pioneers of the Lithuanian national revival, Daukantas wrote the first book on the history of Lithuania written in the Lithuanian language. He also published several books on Lithuanian and Samogitian folklore, and wrote a Polish-Lithuanian dictionary. Happy Birthday to Czech journalist, editor and writer Ferdinand Peroutka (1895-1978). As a proponent of the Czech democratic tradition, Peroutka was arrested after the outbreak of World War II in 1939. For refusing to collaborate with the Nazis, he was held in the German concentration camp Buchenwald until 1945. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Peroutka and depicting two shattered emblems of political oppression: the swastika of Naziism, and the hammer and sickle of Soviet Communism, designed by Czech artist Oldrich Kulhánek (1940-2013), engraved by Miloš Ondrácek, and issued by Czech Republic on February 1, 1995 to commemorate the journalist's birth centenary, Scott No. 2943, plus an image of a photograph of Ferdinand Peroutka.

Happy Birthday to Anton ("Toni") Costache Bacalbasa (1865-1899), a Romanian anti-militaristic political journalist, humorist and politician. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Bacalbasa, designed by Serban Zainea, printed by photogravure, and issued by Romania on May 10, 1965 as one of its "Cultural Anniversary" stamp series, Scott No. 1739, plus an image of a c. 1890 photograph of Toni Bacalbasa.
Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Abby Jane Morrell (1809-?), an American woman who between 1829 and 1831 accompanied her husband Captain Benjamin Morrell on a voyage that took her from New England to the South Pacific. Upon her return, Morrell wrote an observant and thoughtful account of the voyage, entitled Narrative of a voyage to the Ethiopic and South Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Chinese Sea, North and South Pacific Ocean in the Years 1829, 1830, 1831 (1833), which was subsequently abridged and published as Captain's Wife.
