Here is a rough translation of what is written in German script on some of the labels attached
to the Hindenburg stamps.

Become a member of the National Socialist People's Welfare organization

Support the National Socialist People's Welfare organization

Join the NationalSozialistischer Deutscher Studentenbund (political student organization}

Join the NationalSozialistische Volkswohlfahrt
Same organization as above.
The script is tricky, I thought the V was a D

Quote:
Fraktur was used for printed and written German from the 16th century until 1940.
The name Fraktur comes from Latin and means "broken script".
It is so called because its ornamental twiddly bits (curlicues) break the continuous line of a word.
In German it is usually called the deutsche Schrift (German script).

The Nazis basically banned it being taught in schools from 1941 onward but it was used by the older folks until the 1960's.

Notice that the labels attached to the Hitler stamps are already in the Latin script (fonts).
The Hitler definitive set was first issued on August 1, 1941.

Thanks lithograving- nice substantive reply. I have difficulty reading the deutsche schrift, although I am reasonably familiar with the Latin font. it seems curious why the Nazis wanted to eliminate the deutsche shrift.

PostmasterGS, in applying this information to the stamps, I see there are two different Hindenburg pairs numbered as S127. They are photo 1, row 2, the second item and photo 2, row 3, first item. The first one appears to be the correct number because I found that listed as S127 on bidStart. Were the numbers on the second pair transposed, that is S172?

Sorry about that. I'll check the catalog when I get home, but I think it's an S 167. If you look at Photo 4, Row 2, Number 2, the left half of that block appears to be the same, and I had listed it as an S 167.

I am going to link this back to a thread I started in the spring. It should add some very useful information to what has been offered here, also from Postmaster, and I am going to grab the info from this one to add to mine.

Great stuff we get from SCF members!

Not that I can find, though I can't read all the German. I would expect some markdown, but probably just the norm for any other minor defect.

As for my collection, let me take a look and get back with you. Would you be willing to part with some of the stamps from this thread?

PostmasterGS, does Michel list these postal cards? Both are mint/unused.

These are very, very interesting postcards. Don't see them in my Michel anywhere, unfortunately. Are you planning to sell these as well?
