Stamps Made Of Cloth, Polymer, Metal, Wood Etc

Show stamps made of a non paper material. They are cropping up
all over the place made of fabric, plastic, metal foil and even wood.

I'll start off with this embroidered cloth stamp issued by Austria in 2008 picturing the gentian.
They had previously issued a similar one in 2005 with the Edelweiss.

Portugals stamp made from cork. Not odd shape but odd enough.

Wednesday 26th December 2007, the world's first stamp made entirely from cork was issued in Portugal. Designed by the Portuguese engraver Joao Machado, it is made from wafer-thin "paper cork", a thickness of just 0.35mm, and is the first in a print run of 230,000. Every stamp is unique due to the cellular nature of cork.
The stamp has a face-value of one euro and depicts a cork-tree on a hill. It was unveiled at an official ceremony at the Lisbon parliament.


Swiss Embroidered Stamp
The Swiss post has issued on June 21, 2000 the world's first embroidered stamp. The stamp, shown above, was presented for the first time at the National Philatelic Exhibition in St. Gallen, Eastern Switzerland. This stamp is special because for the first time in the history of philately it doesn't limit itself to show a reproduction of an embroidery, it is a real embroidery, inspired by a traditional design, and appealing to modern manufacturing techniques. The stamp on the right, issued in 1976, shows an embroidery of St. Gall that was made by using the usual printing technology.

To updated the times Bhutan made stamps on cds. Here are a set that I picked up last year.

France came out with a Asterix single and souvenir sheet that had actual stone dust on it.


Also Austria came out with this great one.


The stamp consists in a sketch of a fireball above the Earth, with a background of other asteroidal bodies. The value is 3.75 euros. What makes the stamp unique is the fact that in the production process the stamp is sequined with dust from a real chondrite meteorite.

This Austrian souvenir sheet was issued in 2010 and is composed
of a petite point rose.

It might be a gimmick by Austria Post to make money but my particular stamp was used to prepay postage and
therefore served the purpose it was intended for.

I've only got one more, the Austrian 2009 lenticular stamp
showing the Mercedes Silberpfeil (Silver Arrow) race car.
The stamps were produced by the New Zealand firm Outer Aspect.

Another oddity about this stamp is the fact there is no country name
on the design.
The only thing which would relate it to Austria (Österreich)
would be Wien (Vienna) which is written on the stamp twice.

I wonder how the various "textile" stamps shown here hold up in the mailstream??

I have a copy of a Swiss wooden stamp that was postally used. Unfortunately, it's cracked in half along the grain of the wood, oh well.

Actually the embroidered gentian Austria Scott 2175 (first stamp shown on this thread) was properly used on a large envelope from Austria to me.
Being a self adhesive it took awhile to soak though.

Looking at that Austrian petite point stamp I posted above
I'm reminded of my mother's love of doing needle point
which she loved doing until she could no longer due to the strain on her eyes.

One Christmas (1985) she gave made for me a needle point picturing one of my favourite stamps ,
Austria Scott 634.

Just wonderful posts everyone! 65170 very nice on the Cartor Security Printing ones. I would like to acquire some of those myself. Klaus great pics with the different materials. I also am a oddball collector of sorts. Just placed a good size order on odd shaped ones and silk from China. Seems they have been putting out quite a few the last couple of years.
