Yes François is my father... He has, or had proof of my grandfather stamps. I think he might of sold them to mr. Jean Lafontaine. If not, I might try to get some photos if you're interested. |

Rod222: The first is from the Canadian Bible society. First time I see it, so can't tell you more, other than it was probably issued around Christmas and used as a Christmas seal.
Second one: trickier, here's what the Field Guide has to say: "Toronto has the largest group of Estonians outside of Estonia. In 1972, the first Estonian World Festival ("Ulemaailmsed Eesti Paevad" in Estonian) was held in Toronto from July 8-15. A special stamp was issued for the event with the slogans "UEP 1972" and "Kohtume Torontos!" (transl. "Meet in Toronto!")." I've only ever seen one example.
Third one: issued by the Societe Saint-Jean Baptiste of Montreal in 1943 in two colors: red and turquoise. Designed by Louis-Joseph Dubois, who also designed many of the SSJB stamps in the 1940's and 1950's. Breboeuf was a Jesuit priest who became a Canadian martyr after his death in 1649. My parents were married in the Saint Jean de Breboeuf Church in Sudbury, Ontario (but that's getting a bit off topic...)

Hi Minesweeper: The sketches for the stamps are shown in Lafontaine's catalogue. It is interesting to see the progression of the sketches until the final stamp is issued. For instance, for the Verendry stamp, there are three sketches shown, each getting closer to the final design. It is quite rare to have such preliminary design material, especially for cinderella stamps. |

Another one of my favorites. From Field Guide to the Cinderella Stamps of Canada (used with permission): "In response to the Canadian postal strike of 1968, Vancouver-based J. R. MacLean Trucking & Despatch operated a private mail delivery service. Letters and parcels were collected from the Vancouver, B.C. region and delivered into the U.S. mail system in Blaine, Washington. An elegant sheetlet of 8 stamps in 3 different denominations (50c, $1, and $3) was issued that featured Canadian military regimental costumes, labelled in very fine print on the bottom edge." |

Our little Field Guide to the Cinderella Stamps of Canada has the following on the "Postal Strike March 1970" label: "The first mass postal strike in the history of the United States Post Office began on March 18th, 1970. A large label was produced apparently for posting US mail in Toronto so it could be forwarded to US post offices in the west (which were not on strike). The label has no denomination and does not identify the local carrier service. Covers with this label are very similar to one another: the address is typewritten, the 4c queen stamp from 1953 is sometimes used in combination with a 2c stamp from Newfoundland, and the covers are in excellent condition, without the usual nicks, scratches and stains seen on covers that have gone through the postal system. An article cites an anonymous correspondent as stating that the service originated in New York City, and that approximately 200 covers were handled, with 2000 unused labels remaining after the strike was settled. This was either an actual local courier service, or possibly a philatelic fabrication. A printing variety exists of the stamp with a white dot in the left side background. "

"Kohtume Torontos" means "Toronto's Meeting" in Estonian. In July 8-22 1972, there were the First Worldwide Estonian Days in Toronto. If you take into account that üle-Eestiline means "all-Estonian" and Paevad, stand for "days". ÜEP could simply mean "United Estonian Days". Anyway, Estonian are manly Lutheran, not Mormons or Javeh Withness. |

The Greenpeace stamps were part of a sheet of 6. I have seen these with Montreal or Toronto addresses. I have seen covers dated 1990 and 1992 with one of these stamps, but they may date from earlier than that. |

Last bit before going to sleep tonight (it's 2 am here in Canada!): Swedish Canadian Rest Home: "The Swedish Rest Home was founded in 1946 in Vancouver, B. C. as a residence for seniors of Swedish Canadian heritage. To help raise funds, the Home issued annual Christmas seals. Types 1-11: From 1946 to 1956, a set of 11 rouletted seals featuring the Swedish Rest Home were printed in two different colors that vary from year to year. Types 12-24: In 1957 the name Swedish Canadian Rest Home was adopted, and from 1957 to 1969, the 13 perforated seals are dated and feature a maple leaf and three Swedish crowns in yellow on a blue background. Types 25-29: From 1970 to 1975, seals feature a multicolored image of the Swedish Canadian Rest Home in Burnaby, B.C., with the date overprinted." I believe the one illustrated above would be a Type 15. Cheers, Ron

Seen the Canadian Wildlife Federation stamp "Dall Sheep" above, and it triggered my memory of some CWF stamps in a rummage pile of mine. Not sure of the year or the number of different stamps in the series. |
