At the end of the US stamp that most depicts America contest thread last month, our friend Nick posed the question... "Don't you think that most the rest of the world depicts Americans as cowboys? Is there a stamp like that?" I suppose the term 'cowboy' can be taken both positively and negatively. Let's assume Nick meant it in a positive way (excuse me, Nick, if I presume too much) and show some cowboy stamps. Here are two to start off. Though technically these two aren't cowboys. The Pony Express rider is a letter carrier and the Rough Rider is soldier, but they look like cowboys. So let's see some REAL cowboys! Yeeeeeeee Ha!

Nice one litho. The Stampede. Canada's cowboy showcase. And excellent examples from fifia too. Here's a cowboy riding a bucking bronco next to the Colorado capital dome. |

tomiseksj, that Legends of the West is one of the best items issued by USPS in the last 50 years.
Even though the sheet is over the hill kind of colourful, almost kitsch in some ways it's great to look at.
And all the history behind it too. We saw them in movies and watched them on B&W TV,Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley, Wild Bill, Geronimo, Wyatt Earp and all the rest of them.
Which kid didn't play Cowboys & Indians? Well at least in my generation.

Here is an image of a stamp that surely belongs in this thread: "Jerked Down," designed by William K. Schrage after a painting by Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926), artist of the Old American West, engraved by Charles A. Brooks (vignette) and G.A. Payne (lettering), and issued by the USA on March 19, 1964 for Russell's birth centenary, Scott No. 1243. - nethryk |

Nethryk, that's the one I was thinking of. I just knew you would post it. Here are a couple from Spain taken from the 1960 Bull Fighting series. |

lithograving - Well, as a kid I used to play 'Cowboys and Indians," too. But those two bullfighting stamps are what I would call REALLY stretching! - nethryk |
