Londonbus1, I have really problems with my sight and seeing this watermarks... in fact, the ones I can see, doesn't correspondent with this you posted. Are the sizes of planes in both version are the same, and just the order is different? How big a plane need to be in ratio with a stamp? How many planes needs to appears on one stamps in both of the versions? When I take a better look now, it seems that golden one is with a single plane inverted, and gummed... I really can't you help more with this, I am sorry. Is there any way that I make a scan or photo of the watermarks? Here is the scan you wanted: |

Wunderbar ! Wonderful attempt filipo ! from the photo, I would say the two gold examples both have a single plane inverted watermark. There is one plane on each label and maybe a small part of another. I have just checked a red imperf example in my collection and it's the same as your Gold examples. The Multiple planes watermark will have one full plane and parts of at least two others from what I can see. Both of your Royal Purple examples have the same MP watermark and so no new find on this occasion. However, a great treasure to find two of each label in an ebay purchase. I would not be afraid to say that it is a unique purchase. This first day of January 2012 should live long in your memory as it will in mine. Now you can be proud, and correct, when you say you have items in your collection that are 'fit' for a King. Treasure them, talk about them, show them off to your friends and work colleagues. For they are special. Well done and congratulations. Londonbus1 |

Londonbus1, thank you for the nice comments. BUT, upper 2 photos are of the same stamp, just as the lower 2. I just made 2 photos of each one, to be sure that you will see it correctly. Another purple and another gold from the lots DOESN'T have any watermarks. and they both ARE gummed! + here are the scans of the (one) orange, ungummed, which I already posted higher res. scan. I think that it was not soaked... but, I can't be sure. |

Of course, the gummed Purple........I forgot and of course this is unrecorded ! The Gold's are recorded, one with and one without Watermark and the purple ungummed with watermark likewise. You see what happens when excitement takes over ! If you are sure that the gummed purple is without watermark then you must tell the catalogue authors of your find. It is a big one. Look again to be sure and then double check. Post a pic like you did with the others so I can check too. Simply wonderful. This deserves a special announcement. Quiveringbus1 |

Please, take a look on my previous post... I edited it just a minute before you write your post, and I added this orange, ungummed, multiple planes wm. I also found that here is a nice collection with some order... for example: 1. blue, ungummed, multiplane wm; 2. blue, ungummed, 3plane wm; 3. red, ungummed, multiplane wm; 4. red, ungummed, 3plane wm. All this are genuinely ungummed... not soaked, just as the orange from that set in my previous post. And, now... a "Purple, gummed" story... And a proof that there is no watermarks... |

Could it be that there are ungummed examples out there? And how to prove that there wasn't gum originally.
The plot thickens.
I will off to bed now and sleep on it....if indeed I can sleep at all !
A great day and more to come tomorrow I'm sure.

I don't know, but these stamps look SO much mint, that I don't believe that any of them ever had any contact with water or something similar. It is possibly that someone did that with purpose, just to remove the gum, but he needed to do that with SO many efforts... and I don't know why somebody would like just to remove the gum from them? They have never been attached anywhere... I can bet. Have a good night! Here is also very late, and I know that in Israel is even one hour more! I just hope that some of these are not stolen from the King himself! |

Londonbus1, are from my previous posted scans visible all details important for you? That it is Purple, gummed and unwatermarked?
I am going to be a couple of days out of town, so, before I go, I would like to add all infos (which I can provide) and additional scans/photos you will possibly need. |

filipo,
I suggest doing it like this, if you are agreeing. I will write to Graham Wilson, Co-Author of the BPE Catalogue and ask him about the 5 lables you have [2 Blue,2 Red and 1 Orange] that are without gum and see what his reaction is. I have had contact with him many times and he knows me and that I will not give him any rubbish. I will tell him about you and what happened but not the details. When you are back, send the details and the scans of the 5 labels PLUS the Purple without watermark [High res scans are what he will ask for] to him with your name and he will decide. There most likely won't be a new catalogue for a few years so there is no rush but best to do it now while the iron is hot...so to speak !
If you want that I do it, I will do so, no problem but it will be with your name, they are yours after all. If the latter is the preferred option you will need to send me High Res scans so I can forward them to him. He may ask that you send one of the labels without gum [Blue,Red or Orange] to him for inspection. He will want to see for himself, decide for himself, if they have been soaked or not.
What do you think ?

I already included high resolution scans of the Purple without watermark on this page... both sides... do I need to make even higher-res scans of them? Is everything fine with them or I will need to make another? Is gum visible on it clearly? Are 1200 dpi output resolution scans will be to large?
I can make everything you asked me for today later, or tomorrow... because I will not go on trip before Wednesday, and I am on my holidays these days. I will also have my laptop with myself, so will stay in contact here or through e-mails, but I will not take a scanner with myself, and also not stamps... so I would like to make all you want before I go on, so that we can continue in a discussion.
Btw. is it will be possible that I send all these stamps to Graham Wilson, that he make an expertize on them, and that he send me all of them back?
And, please, could you tell me, just informative, how much is a catalog value for an gold, watermarked (3sp) stamp? |

Let me see what Graham says before going any further. you will need to send the scans [same size as shown here] to him by email should he request it.
I don't think he would wish to view all the labels, but one might be sufficient.
Let us see.
I'll write to him tomorrow. |

OK, Londonbus1, thank you. For me, these stamps are still just usual cinderellas, and, unfortunately, I still can't share your amazement. Of course, it is my fault, or my ignorance, but I can't helpe myself!
I already gave all of myself to describe and scan to you all you asked me for, and I will do that again for Graham... I hope it will get some fruits, and that, after all, these stamps will survive a dozens of scanning, strong-light watermark searching, and, especially, my clumsy left-hands :) |

Quote: For me, these stamps are still just usual cinderellas Oh, if only that were so. If they are what we think they are, then 'usual' is the last word one should use. You will most likely never come across these again in your lifetime. If I am ever in Croatia for a holiday, I will be sure to look you up just to see them ! Londonbus1 |

As I tell you - my ignorance! Is any place on the Internet where I can learn more about this issue? I tried to Google, and the first thing I found out was a description on another forum, written a couple of years ago, by some fellow with a strange name - Londonbus1, I think :) My 2nd Google search was also by the same person, on the 3rd different Forum now... And than I gave up! Seriously, is there any link on the Internet about this issue? I know that they are described in the BSE catalog, but I don't have it... and, even if I order it now, it will come in 10 days, not before :/ edit: I found this auction on ebay... it consist a Royal Purple, as the seller suggest: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-Mercur...360046154120 |
