Greece Electrification Projects April 14, 1962 One of the seven stamps shows the Plastiras Dam. The Plastiras Dam is a concrete arch dam in Karditsa regional unit. It impounds the Tavropos (Megdovas) River and creates Lake Plastiras. The dam has a height of 83 m and width of 220 m. The three Pelton-type turbines have a total capacity of 130 MW.  |

South Africa Cooperation in Southern Africa February 15, 1990 One of the four stamps features Cahora Bassa Dam. The Cahora Bassa Dam is a dam in Mozambique. It is one of the three major dams on the Zambezi river system. The Cahora Bassa system is the largest hydroelectric project in southern Africa with the power station containing five 415 megawatts turbines.  |

Zimbabwe Bridges of Zimbabwe - Kariba Barrage Bridge October 24, 2006 The Kariba Dam is a concrete arch dam in the Kariba Gorge of the Zambezi river basin between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The dam stands 128 meters tall and 579 meters long. The dam forms Lake Kariba which extends for 280 kilometers. The hydroelectric power station has a capacity of 1626 MW. The Kariba Barrage Bridge connects the two countries.  |

Turkey Dams in Turkey September 19, 1999 The Çubuk-1 Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Çubuk Stream near Çubuk in Ankara Province. It is located 12 km north of the center of Ankara and was built to control floods and provide drinking water to the city. The dam was operational in April 1936. The Atatürk Dam, originally the Karababa Dam, is a zoned rock-fill dam with a central core on the Euphrates River in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. The construction was completed in 1990. It was built for electricity and irrigation. The power station is equipped with eight 300 MW Francis-type turbines.  |

Poland Air Mail - Porabka Dam December 15, 1958 The Porabka dam, located in the town of Porabka in southern Poland, was completed in 1937 chiefly to control flooding in the Sola River valley. The dam created Lake Miedzybrodzkie. The power plant has a capacity of 500 MW and was operational since 1953.  |

Bosnia and Herzegovina BH Post 50th Anniversary of Jablanica Power Plant March 7, 2005 The Jablanica Dam is an arch-gravity dam on the Neretva River about 4 km north of Jablanica. The dam was constructed between 1947 and 1955 with the primary purpose of hydroelectric power production. The power station, equipped with six 30 MW Francis-type turbines, started operation in 1955.  |

Suriname Natural Resources October 9, 1965 One of the four stamps shows Afobaka Dam. The Afobaka Dam is an embankment dam with a main gravity dam section on the Suriname River near Afobaka in Brokopondo District of Suriname. The dam was completed in 1964, and its 180 MW hydroelectric power plant was operational in 1965. About 75% of power generated is used for processing aluminum, the rest is used in Paramaribo downstream.  |

El Salvador National Energy Resources September 13, 1984 Cerrón Grande Dam spans the Lempa River 78 km north of San Salvador. The concrete gravity dam has a height of 90 m and a length of 800 m. The hydroelectric power plant was fitted with two 85 MW Francis-type turbines.  |

Paraguay Yacyretá Dam November 28, 2005 Yacyretá Dam is built over the waterfalls of Jasyretâ-Apipé in the Paraná River, between the Argentine Province of Corrientes and the Paraguayan City of Ayolas. The dam is 808 meters long, and its power plant with twenty 155 MW turbines was commissioned in 1994.  |

Portugal The 100th Anniversary of the Ministry of Public Work December 10, 1952 The Pego do Altar Dam - originally named Salazar Dam - is a dam located on the river of Alcáçovas, in the basin of river Sado, in the parish of Santa Susana. The dam was built in 1949 for agriculture in the Sado Valley and for hydroelectricity. Its reservoir is nowadays a tourist attraction, especially for sport fishing.  |

Brazil Itaipu Bi-National Project - Brazil and Paraguay May 6, 2011 The Itaipu Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Paraná River located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The dam, 196 m high and nearly 8 km long, is composed of gravity, buttress and embankment sections. The dam was opened in May 1984. The hydroelectric plant is equipped with twenty 700 MW Francis-type turbines. In 1994, the American Society of Civil Engineers elected the Itaipu Dam as one of the seven modern Wonders of the World.  |
