Blade...You have a point...Those who don't join (this) a forum are hard to capture, but as spanishmoss suggested that there are in his family those who collect stamps...Ya, your right, there are a lot of older collectors in this forum, but any analysis could help.
P.S.- This poll is just for fun and information reasons. |

So the record will show, spanishmoss. But another oddity that shows is our expectations that female-folk don't generally collect stamps. |

Quote: another oddity that shows is our expectations that female-folk don't generally collect stamps I have found that there are far more female collectors than I would have guessed. I still think are probably more male collectors but stamp collecting is a very family friendly sport. I do wonder if there are many female collectors we don't hear from or see. Perhaps females tend to be more "casual", and frequent fewer shows, etc. Then again, maybe that's just another stereotype. It's obviously not always true, so don't hit me just for speculating |

I can't speak for other females, but I know that as a stay-at-home mother, I always feel bad spending a lot of (my husband's!)money on stamps for myself. When I take my boys to a stamp show, I tend to buy things for them instead of myself. Their collections are growing at a nice steady pace, while mine is more at a snail's pace. I feel it is more important to keep them interested in this hobby, than to add to my collection.
I wonder if this is true of other mothers through the years?
Did any of you guys out there have moms that helped you out over the years with your collections?

I remember mt mom helping me and my grandmother also.
I think most moms want the best for their kids. Just natural. |

spanishmoss...I think at an early age girls treat the stamp hobby as a hobby, not as future investment opportunity as (maybe) guys would....Don't get me wrong, there probably women out there (including yourself) that could talk circles around me about stamps....And that is just fine with me...I don't care who I learn from women or men. P.S.- Come to think about it, boys also treat a stamp hobby as a hobby..So ignore everthing I said.... spanishmoss...I will include the kids when I make up a final graph to show everyone... |

I was introduced to stamp collecting as a child by my father who was himself introduced by his father. I have two brothers that were never interested by it. I always loved geography and history so stamp collecting fit right in my interests. To collect more stamps, I used to write to banks and offices of big companies to keep stamps they get on envelloppes and send them to me. I even received whole collections this way from folks that inherited and did not know what to do with them. Things have changed since then. There are more activities available for kid and, even if they love history and geography, they have an endless ressource with the internet. Stamps are also not what they used to be since companies mostly use prepaid letters. There are less stamps in the mail today. |

I ticked the 11-20y, eventhough my birthday is in March and I'll be 21 by then.. Although I have to say that I haven't yet bought a single stamp for collecting. I'm not sure if I qualify as a collector then ;) I've only inherited from my grandpa.. So my father and I are in the sorting process. We figure it's no point in buying stamps before you know what you already've got. :) I don't know anyone in my age who's any interested at all in stamps. In fact, I think the only one I know is my father. (oh and my mother wants us to find some "million-dollar-stamp", sure I'd really like to find that Swedish 3sk Banco on cover, but I doubt it) |

You sure do qualify Tomten ! What you might find is a rare re-entry on a common stamp......that is the beauty of going through a collection

I actually thought that the larger catagory would be in that 31 to 40 age group, bad sadly, I too had had to click the dreaded 51 to 60. |
