Here is a tip on studying Large/Small Queen stamps I was told about by a couple of prominent collectors:
If you find it too expensive to obtain various paper, gum and perforation samples of the Large and Small Queens ... consider looking at the Canadian "Bill" revenue stamps.
The Bill stamps were printed at the same time by the same company in the same buildings with the same paper and the same equipment. Thus, the characteristics of the Bill stamps is the same as the Large/Small Queens.
I have most of the 3rd series Bill stamps but only a few 1st and 2nd. Odds are if dates line up - 1st series Bill stamps will relate to large queens, 2nd series to early printings of sm queens and 3rd series to the later small queens. Now if all things are created equal this woul mean the Bill stamps are a basket of insanity as well. Sort of a pandoras box but nothing ventured nothing gained, lets dig em out.
Also, Canada #15, the 5c beaver, the perforations are EXACTLY as the first Ottawa printing of the small queens. Placed side by side, the perforations line up exactly horizontally and vertically.
