alanl, that's fair enough, you've shown a lot of good varieties in this topic.
I was wondering about the "line in 5" variety. I have been looking through some 5c Centennials and I have found some with lines (like the ones you have shown), but none that I could say for certain are the one in the catalog. Is there a definitive "line in 5" example that anyone can share? |

Here is the vertical line through '5' variety (458vi, 458piv). Please note that it is from position 11 ... not position 1 as noted in the Unitrade (this has been corrected for the 2014 edition). |

Much appreciated studystamps, now I know exactly what to look for. OK if I copy the picture for reference? |

The line through the 5 looks very weak. Is it just an ink smear or a groove in the plate? I`ve looked at about 7000 and not found one. |

A smudgy oval in the right margin tilted a bit to the left. It has the same vertical position as the one in the last post. Both are thought to be caused by the same object. Reported variety. |

3Dadeo: certainly, use the image as you desire.
alanl: the person who initially reported this variety also verified its location on the original press sheet (plate 3, pane row 1/column 1, stamp position row 2/column 1) at the Library and Archives in Ottawa.
I have only seen it mint, on plate blocks (UL, Plate 3). Have yet to find a used copy but I don't have an overly large used 'stock' of the 5c stamp compared to other values. |

alanl, studystamps I too have searched many, many used 5c and have not yet found one. I have about a couple thousand to go in my latest batch and will let you know what turns up.
This line is much different than the ink smears that seem to occur around the 5 on some stamps. Sometimes the smear is almost in the same position, but it is not as defined and looks like a smear, not a fine line. |

A small dash in the lower margin under the front of the train. Looks like 2 dots. Reported variety. |

I have not seen this one reported. It starts with a dot above the P in postage and then there are some marks off to the right. |

I'm sure that I may not have properly situated the various variety locations indicated by alani in his posts on this topic and may have missed some as well. However, here's a consolidated SC543 7 cent centennial transportation stamp with my attempt. This should make flyspecking of this stamp a little easier. |

What a great idea Blackjag. If I had done this from the start I would only have needed one post. I was thinking of doing this on some of the remaining dots. Post them four at a time. Well...you did miss the 42 on the bottom. |

Thanks alani, but I prefer to see your posts as they contain the proper detail and descriptions.
I don't understand the "42" reference and will add it to my consolidated image if you would email me the scan that I missed.
I'll do the SC 544 8 Cent Library of Parliament tomorrow with 37 of the 75 known constant varieties. |
