Interesting cover and interesting story also. You got me curious and I read about Bird's Rock. This shipwreck happened before the first lighthouse was built in 1870. This Rock had the reputation of being a graveyard for ships. It is 30 km from Magdelen Islands a beautiful place to be in summertime in Quebec. Hope one day I can make it there. Hard to find if your cover was on board on this trip.

On the first page of this thread, Petert4522 asked,

"Why do we seem to romanticize shipwrecks, but not plane- or train wrecks?"

A good question, I thought. My guess is that they aren't as messy, or at least we don't think they are. Also there's the romanticism and mystery of the sea.

For the heck of it, here's a train wreck stamp from Cuba, 1950.

The colour of the stamp is horrific enough.

in my collection of bridges on stamps there are two stories of shipwrecks in the Pacific Ocean. They both started in San Francisco, they were at one time, and they killed two men - but the death transport "President Coolidge" is happily ended the absurdity,

but the disappearance of Amelia Earhart was crew huge tragedy

Jubilee might be interested in this report re the Jardine-built ship Lochmaben Castle launched from Ricibucto, New Brunswick:

Here is a link to the report in its entirety. The part you want relating to the ship floundering begins about p4. There is even a part relating to a captain leaving his ship which hints of more recent events.

St Pierre and Miquelon
Transpacific Shipwreck
October 12, 2005
In May 18, 1971, the Transpacific got caught by the treacherous shoals around the French Islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The West German freighter joined other ships that made these waters their final resting place. The 398 foot, 9 inch long cargo carrier had been built at Lubeck, Germany, in 1954 and started trading to the Great Lakes when the St. Lawrence Seaway opened in 1959.
