I've been told that forgeries exist of the Second Issue but until today I'd never seen one. My understanding is that the forgeries generally conform to the authentic image. The one presently on ebay is very obvious so may be something new:

The surcharge is applied over the cancel and appears distorted compared to the authentic Type 1 surcharge below:

Wow! My face is red! I managed to post one of only two forgeries, in my collection, as the authentic reference. I corrected it and will post some comparisons later.

Sorry,

I got out an old stock book and find that I have more material than I thought.

There are 4 types in the BA second issue. The example is Type 1:

Type 1:

1. A straight line among the waves
2. An angled bar
3. The waves dip to the left of the cross

All authentic examples:

4. The dips in the waves follow almost a straight line.

Scanned ebay - Latvia 1919 - and found mostly legitimate copies. in - Russia 1919 - there is a neat cover with good type 4 and type 2 examples. A bit pricey:

The most common forgery I find in my stock folderis based on Type 2. It is a rather good imitation:

Type 2

Type 2 has the waves dipping on top of the cross.

Type 2 forgery:

The two are very similar, but on the forgery the wave dips do not align vertically. Look under the 'A.'. They seem to follow a shallow arc. Also, they dip on the left edge of the cross.

Very interesting offering on ebay today (6 July 12) There are three genuine surcharges and one forgery (lower right stamp) in the same lot. Reasonable price too.
