Just 3 KMS (2 miles) north of Angus, Ontario, and a 1/2 hour from Barrie where the stamp club meets. I also enjoyed meeting jamesw and Bujutsu and outbidding jamesw a couple of times. I told them both how much I enjoy this forum. |

I am a great fan of meeting fellow internet buddies and would love to meet more of you lot. However I am living a small village in Israel so unless I make a trip of a lifetime, it's only here through the forum. But I will be in the UK in September so am planning our usual meeting should any British-based members be looking in. But it's just great to know you all. james..say hello to the cover for me ! Hi all,
I live in Redford, Michigan, USA. About 15 miles west of Detroit. There is an active philatelic community in this area. Many clubs, shows, etc. |

Outside Mount Albert Ontario, which is outside Newmarket Ontario, which is north of Toronto Ontario. The Barrie club is 45 min to an hour away, but worth the drive. |

LB and all the UK members - it would be great to meet up sometime. But apart from the travelling time involved from up here in Scotland (6 hours to Yorkshire...), how exactly do I explain to my husband that I need him to look after the kids while I go off to see a man I met on the internet? |

I am approximately 60 - 65 miles North of Barrie, Ontario in the district of Muskoka. We are approximately 130 miles North of Toronto for those of you who may not know where Barrie is.

(Not to mention what his reaction would be when you said you were meeting them to practice philately !) |

A possible thought about meet-ups.
Assuming some of us travel to some shows, would it be a logical thing to start a thread about a month before a MAJOR show (Like APS, or upcoming ATA show in Lancaster, Pa., or one of that nice major annual show in Toronto) and anyone who is going (and wants to meet others) could leave postings ...
Then, when the show was near, there could be some attempts to set up a meeting time and place.
I have only been to a handful of major shows (last two were APS show last year in Columbus; and two years before that in Pittsburgh).
I was not on the forum then, but would have happily met up with anyone.
So - give it a thought - a new thread for big shows titled something simple like "Is anyone going to APS in Whererever in August?"

Haven't been to a Toronto show for quite some time jeff, but, your suggestion makes sense. Timing is everything.

tstraz-- I was in the Detroit area in Canton from '94 - '01. My daughter went to middle school in Plymouth, where they have the annual stamp show.
My wife's parents sold their house in Redford right off of West Chicago and Inkster just over a year ago-- had been there since 1953. My wife went to grade school at Robert Bellamine.....small world!

I'm in New York near the Vermont / Massachusetts border. There's a few collectors near me, but most do not use a computer unfortunately. |

OK to our fine Canadian friends-- a little off topic, but--
When my daughter was in 5th grade in the Detroit area, she had to make a report on an explorer and hers was Henry Hudson. I told her "I'll take you to see Hudson Bay sometime".....hard to get to from Michigan, but the body of water on the bottom of Hudson Bay is James Bay, and from Detroit, it's doable.
So I think it was about '95, we drove up to Cochrane, which for those who don't know Ontario, is about as far north as you can drive to in Ontario, and was the home of Tim Horton. Beautiful drive, and we especially enjoyed the afternoon in North Bay and wading in Lake Nipissing. From Cochrane, we took the famous "Polar Bear Express" to Moosonee, and also toured Moose Factory Island (the oldest settlement in Canada, started in the 1600's by the Hudson Bay Company), and took a boat ride down the Moose River to James Bay.
Whenever I've met anyone from Canada, I've talked about this trip--and have never met a Canadian who has ever ridden on the Polar Bear Express.
Have any of you ever made this trip? Well worth the effort, and great history.
Just curious-- Ray |
