I think this is an 1897 Seal from Chile (The Winged Wheel), lithographed by Henri C Gillet.

Can anyone add a bit more information about this stamp or about Gillet?

Thanks

Yes, it is an official seal. If I remember correctly these were issued without Gum and the money for these lies in the postally used copies.
I believe all real usages are folded and have adhesive traces (since it was issued without gum).

Well I've struggled to find a postally used example at an affordable price. Didn't know about the absence of gum, interesting, thanks.

Hi

Your official seal is in very good condition !

Henri C. Gillet was a lithographic printer established in Valparaíso since late 1880's.
Before, in 1854, he was in Santiago and was the printer of some Columbus stamps (nr.4 in recess and nr.5 litho)

In those years he made several works for the postal administration, printing Official Seals, Postage Due stamps, AR stamps (avis de reception) and AP stamps (avis de paiement).

The Winged Wheel was printed in litho, in sheets of 25 (5x5) without gum, in cream color paper.
It is very difficult to find them used and in good condition because they were used to close parcels, and usually broke them to open the package.

Thank you very much for this information, very helpful.

(also just read that Gillet and Desmadryl were both Frenchmen who had emigrated to Chile)

Two mythological gods associated with the winged wheel; Athena and Mercury... (The 'ABNCo' I presume refers to the American Bank Note Company)
