Sold to me as Bosnian, but I'm convinced it isn't. Has a look of Austria. Anyone recognise it and know its function in life?

It certainly has the look of an Austrian design, but could be from parts of their former empire. 1919 was the year that many of the independent states began issuing their own stamps. The "Stempel" cancellation suggests it may have some fiscal or franking purpose and woth a look in related revenue catalogues. |

Being able to tell who the personage on the stamp is will help immenseley. Is it Maria Theresa? Maria Hilf? |

The first thing to strike me, was the boldness of the "1919" this is typical of a Russian set. The vignette is perplexing. Male or female? headdress? is that a helmet? No clues so far in the spandrels design. Albeit there seem to be a number of "stars" |

Agreed, but not pertinent I think, in this case. The 6 pointed star also features widely on the design of the stamps of Trinidad.
I would almost certainly guess something to do with Russia, we had the Spartacist uprising in Berlin 1919 and the Russian civil war with foreign intervention.
It looks like it has stumped SCF! :)

The cancellation on both copies apears to be in German: "...KONTROLL STEMPEL". |

Here's some info found at: http://schroders-alumni.coloni.net/...default.aspxCaroline Shaw, Schroders Archivist, has written this blog as she wanted to share some of the more interesting and unusual aspects of her work with past and present employees of Schroders. We hope that you will enjoy reading it.
19/12/11 A very dull stamp I came across a very dull stamp last week: no denomination, no country name, no distinguishing features at all apart from the date, 1919. Naturally, I was intrigued.
The clue was in the overstamping: D.Ö. Kontroll-Stempel.
This turned out to be from a country I had never before heard of - the Deutsch-Österreich or Republic of German Austria. When the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed in 1918 at the end of the first world war, the Republic of German Austria took over a rather vaguely defined territory intended to comprise the German-speaking parts of the erstwhile empire. It was superseded in October 1919 by an Austrian republic whose borders were determined by the post-war treaties.
The stamp was stuck on an insert to a bond issued in April 1914 for the old empire. J. Henry Schröder & Co and N.M. Rothschild & Sons had jointly managed the London tranche of the issue, and it had been considered a great success at the time.
War and the collapse of states are never good for bondholders however. The bond that found its way into Schroders' vault had another overstamping marking it as "unsecured" and, for whatever reason, dividend payments were never made against the coupons attached to the bond. |

Nice searching, Kurt!
Now Nigel, is that LB1's stamp? I found a post from 2008 by LB1 showing the exact same stamp. |

Pffft! What do I know? Excellent work Kurt that was a doozy. I was just about to post, I doubted it was from Germany, because it is so untypical, no currency tablet, no script. I was convinced it was a propaganda label SCF does it again! |

Quote: I posted the same image of my copy on my first day's posting on StampWants back in May 2008! Well Nigel, I guess LB1 must have posted your stamp on StampBoards, also in May 2008!! Talk about a long-term group effort! The history of the search to ID this stamp is almost as interesting as the stamp ID itself! k |
