To be honest, I thought that they were Dutch roller cancellations too.

The awkward thing, is in the *.pdf that gets around for these. Netherlands Roller Cancels It begins by saying something to the effect..
"The Netherlands roller cancel, (us known as the "Lifesaver" cancel is the most common type of pre cancel"
Intermixing both descriptions, so perhaps used in both scenarios?

Sorry cynical, but I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by 'identifiers'. What info Unitrade gives is shown on the page I scanned. It shows the different types (A to Y), number of bars per stamp, time period used, Scott's #s used on. Also 10 styles of town/city precancel. It states that in terms of the town and city types, 58 towns/cities have used at least one style of precancel with it's name and province indicated. Not sure what else to tell you. |

I have a copy of The Standard Canada Precancel Catalogue 1988, also published by Unitrade. The two Canada precancels jamesw posted are identified as V-205 and V-238, respectively. Neither of these 1-cent green coils have the style W precancel. Regards, Robert |

Thankyou Robert. I think I get it now. I see in the regular Unitrade, the stamps are listed separately with their precancels as 205xx precanceled (two styles) and 238xx precanceled (one style), respectively. |

I checked the precancel catalog for that second style for Canada Scott 205, but there was nothing else in the bar precancel section of the catalog. The second style might be one of the town and city precancels. (Or my catalog may be out of date.) Robert |

Jamesw: I had a hard time saying what I was trying to say. However, your post, with "xx" was what I was after. The only Unitrade I have seen was a 1992 copy from my local library and it seemed to be a carbon copy of my 1991 Scott. Subsequent to this I have seen Canadian stamp numbers on the web with the appended "xx" and wondered what it designated. |

To get back to the Dutch cancels for a moment. Yes, they are precancels of a sort. If you ran a newspaper for instance, and you had to mail a batch of them, you would affix the postage to the addressed wrappers. Take the wrappers to the post office who would "precancel" the stamps. One would then put the wrappers around thye papers and mail them! And yes, you are right, they are not precancels in the sense that you would be able to buy them precanceled at the post office. |

A Dutch friend of mine living here in Canada once was telling me about the "Life Saver" cancellations and he showed me singular cancels (as far as I can remember), not like the ones shown here in this thread, which appear more like a machine 'roller' type (?)
So, it is getting more confusing than before. I will have to get back to him on this and see what he says.

Hello Fabio, I read on one of the links that Argentina experimented with precancels..i am a novice at Argentina, I know they have many perfins and departmental or ministerial overprints..but these also are postmarked...i wish I could find a good Argentine specialized catalog in English...other countries I collect have journals and specialized books on their stamps...but Argentina is tough unless you speak Spanish ! |

Bujutsu, further to 22crows link, it appears the roller was for precancelling stamps. If the stamp was on the letter (let's imagine bulk) then it was "precancelled" on the letter by the roller. That makes sense to me, but the line becomes grey between "precancelling" and ordinary "cancelling" The difference being the cancel itself no CDS. It is explained in an *.pdf called RollerCancels*.pdf by author Hans Kremer But I cannot find the file online |
