I just acquired one old scrapbook with a really lot of junk, but also with some interesting pieces. For example,a pair of Germany Scott's #299 looks nice, and another lot I was unable to identify... I really lot of work form. However, if someone is more familiar than me with this stuff "on the first" sight, I will be thankful for any advice what to check up the next.

Junk? There are some great looking items there. The book itself looks worrisome.

Also, just an FYI but you posted this under US Classic Stamp section.

The inflation stamps on cover and piece are likely to be worth FAR more than any mint sheets or blocks, as that strongly suggests they are genuinely used. Most are worth significantly more used than mint. It's not an absolute guarantee that they're genuinely used, but it's a very good sign. NOTHING should be soaked off cover or piece, absolutely NOTHING. Trust me on this.

I can't tell how all these items are attached - hinged, glued, taped??
That will make a lot of difference, both in time and value.

I wanted to open this thread in "World Classic Stamps Mint and Used", and just made a mistake. I hope that moderator will relocate this on the right place!

Btw. on the last photo are some original artworks (!), oil on the cardboards... probably for some labels or so... there is much more similar pieces in this book.

does mods on SCF use to move the threads from the missed subforums to the right ones, or it will be wise that I open this thread also on the World Stamps subforum, and let this one to go down?

It's a scrapbook rather than an album. No surprise as to how items were "mounted". Some valuable pieces in there nonetheless.

yes, it is a scrapbook... pretty humid... and old, fragile pages are very dangerous to threats the stamps... so, I will need very soon to find out what is most important to be removed and saved from the book, and which method I will need to use for that...

btw. it has a thick wooden(!), hand decorated cover!

Cut off as much of the backing paper from the item as possible. Use a swatch of sanding cloth (high grit count) to sand off the remaning amount of backing paper and some of the paste that is on the back of the item you want to save.

You're going to have your hands full - no doubt about it, but like others have said, there's is some really nice items in there. Hopefully you can correct the sins of our ancestors and preserve a lot of the material. I would love to find a collection like that one day.

Rather than duplicating this thread in the intended section, click on the "send a note to staff" link at the bottom right of your posting and ask that it be moved. That way you don't lose any of the discussion that has already taken place.

Love the old cigarette cards in this scrapbook, but don't know where you can get any information on this specific ones.

Forget the sanding; with all due respect, that is a terrible idea, plus, would take forever.

Some of the cigarette cards and non-philatelic novelties can simply be soaked off in cool water, then thoroughly pressed; they should look as good as new. That will also tell you what kind of glue you are dealing with.

Most stamps on piece or cover can be soaked off, and the stamp later replaced with school glue. Expertizers checking watermarks do this all the time. It also takes forever, but you're not in any hurry, and if properly done, no one will know the covers and pieces were disassembled, so to speak; there may be a brownish stain if it's horsehide glue, etc. But you will have done the best you can, and the philatelic value will have been maintained. To do this, of course, you only soak half a dozen items at one time, so you don't lose track of which stamps belong on which covers. What is clear, of course, is that virtually no one will buy them still stuck to scrapbook pages.

The only thing I won't at least consider soaking is Netherland Indies, some of which dissolve in water LOL.

Or, you can offer ME the book exactly as it is now. I might buy it, I might not...

doug2222, I didn't buy this book to resell it, I wanted to have some fun with it. I will see what I can do with them... probably will try to remove just the valuable pieces... for example, I just found in Michel 2004/2005 that 1 milliarden on 100M single had a catalog value of 38 euros (about $45) canceled... and here is a block of 8 canceled. Probably worth to be saved...

btw. what "sägezahnartig durchstochen" means??
