This GB cinderella overprinted "5/- 5/- MALTA" was sold on ebay yesterday:

seller: chibs3
link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/380470587954
price: £25.86 + £8 P&P

I have never seen this cinderella in auctions or on the internet.

Do you think that the overprint was produced in 1937? Or is it a modern fantasy overprint?

I am asking because after searching several times on Google, I found absolutely no reference to any overprints by the colonies on British 1937 cinderellas, except for those issued for the Canada and USA royal visits in 1939. Moreover the font looks suspicious.

If this was really issued in 1937, I think there would be some reference to it somewhere.

The other possibility is that it was done in 1937, but by an individual who made them for him/herself and did not sell them.

What do you think?

It looks almost as if someone typed the "overprint" on this label. The original does not look like a stamp; no value?????

No, the original was a cinderella as well. It was issued in a sheetlet of eight designs, and each exist in three colours: red, blue and violet.

However this is the only one I have seen with this "overprint".

The overprint is clearly TYPEWRITER font; not sure if it was typed directly on the label, or letterpress, etc. Look at the back and see if the period or the dashes made an indent.

I can't see how this could be proven to be period authentic. It looks to me as if someone took an old Cinderella and recently typed on the "Malta, 5/-". Now, this could have been done 75 years ago, but unless you can prove that it is actually from the 1937 coronation I would say its a case of ebay bunnies (or whatever you want to call hem; people with too much money and no sense).

Oh, anyhow does one justify £8 shipping- I can ship a large and heavy package for that price (maybe not to Malta... But still, international mail isn't that expensive. (

doug2222, I didn't buy it. My maximum bid on it was £2.50.

The £8 shipping was for Royal Mail International Signed For (registered). If I recall correctly it costs £6 or so.
