I was filing my military and wartime mail and came across this 'oddity', for a lack of a better word. I have to assume that the Minister for Wartime prices and Trade Board was "D. Gordon". However his name has literally been obliterated and the name "K.W. Taylor" replaced him.

What I am wondering is has any other member seen Canadian offical mail like this with a similar 'obliteration' marking??

I suspect it's just an economy move to keep from wasting envelopes?

Interesting, it is equivalent to an overprint on a stamp! I have never seen that before on signed post free official mail.

Research shows that Donald Gordon, a banker, was the Chairman of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, appointed by the Ministry of Labour in 1941. K.W. Taylor was Secretary.

Perhaps Mr. Gordon pre-signed many envelopes, more than needed, and rather than waste paper during wartime, the overprint was created, and envelopes newly signed.

My late grandfather worked under him at the CNR, Gordon was appointed chairman there in 1950.

Nice cover.

Great information and thank you all for your input.

From BeeSees' comment, I am wondering if K.W. Taylor was promoted to his position after Donald Gordon left that job?? Just a guess of course.

Now that I have information on this man, I will have to re-think how I will write up my album page with this cover. As Daffy Duck would say - "Oh the shame of it all"
