Recently I got a huge collection and whilst I was going through it I ran across this odd looking POPPY DAY stamp issued by the American Legion. My question is has anybody ever seen this particular stamp before and possibly know anything about it like year issued and if possible it's purpose? I thank you for your time taking a look and for any information.

Your seal is listed in the Mosbaugh Catalogue Section One, Patriotic and Veteran's Seals. The catalogue number is 80Ca02 and was issued in 1948.

Each year around Memorial Day, Veterans of Foreign Wars members and American Legion Auxiliary volunteers distribute millions of bright red poppies in exchange for contributions to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. The program provides multiple benefits to the veterans and to the community. The hospitalized veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which helps to supplement their incomes and makes them feel more self-sufficient. The physical and mental activity provides many therapeutic benefits as well. Donations are used exclusively to assist and support veterans and their families. The poppy also reminds the community of the past sacrifices and continuing needs of our veterans. The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn to honor the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars.

The Mosbaugh Catalogues are available through the Christmas Seal and Charity Stamp Society and may be obtained here: http://christmasseals.net/

Although they do sell occasionally, most of these Poppy Day stamps on ebay are over priced. This stamp is valued at about $1.00 with one or more straight edges and about $2.00 if mint with gum, perforated on all sides and with VF centering.

The most current Mosbaugh Catalogue Section One that is available now is dated 1979.
It is, however,in the process of being updated and revised. Hopefully we will see the new Section One catalogue sometime next year.

Just a small story on the oppy fund- My dad faithfully sold poppies for the Canadian Legion . He served in the RCAF for a short time at the end of WW2 . After many years of selling and sometimes highest donation amounts received for that particular Branch ( he always stood guard at the Beer Store- BEER STORE= only retail place beer is sold in Canada) as it was a great location.
When he passed away the legion assisted with Funeral expenses that came from the Poppy fund he had so deeply believed in and contributed to. There were also many other things I can recall from wheel chairs , oxygen machines, even the simplist of bathtub aids that were bought and installed that all came from the Poppy fund.
With NOV quickly approaching please dig as deep as you can and donate to this great cause. Also take a few minutes and help a young person really understand what the Poppy stands for and its importance in remebering our fallen heros.
