Does it looks genuine? Damaged too much?

Scott #33, $475 in 2008. Worth 1% or less as a space-filler. Looks genuine based on the cancellation.

I think I identified it as being Portugal Scott #49 pale violet. It make me think of some of my old Brazil stamps, the color has faded away. It's happened with pale color. For Brazil at least I notice that some old stamps are very hard to get with the original color. But yours look so bad and has missing perf. It's genuine but without color. The postmark is nice, the only reason I would keep this stamp.

It's not #49 because it has block lettering in the word "Reis," (type A14), not letters with serifs (type A15).

Right on. I enlarge the picture with my Scott on cd and I can see the difference. First I thought this stamp was from Brazil. In those years Brazil was a colony of Portugal. What i'll remember is that some Portugal stamps from this era also have the color disappeared just like some old stamp I have from Brazil. They were probably print by the same printer. Again I think some of these old stamps with pale color are very hard to find with the original tint either for Brazil or Portugal. And this must affect the value of the stamp.

Edit: I was wrong. Brazil was independent in 1822!

I have a few of these in my collection & mostly the yellow & light violet stamps really fade if exposed to light for prolonged periods of time ( especially sunlight ). Not sure if it's a problem with the ink though. I have kept them in my collection because they are fault free & have very nice period cancellations
I will try & scan them & post later

marios
