Not sure exactly where to put this-- hope this is the appropriate section of the forums!
Anyway... I've collected stamps for 40+ years, and have gotten lots of enjoyment from our hobby. I am also a writer by trade, and more recently have started writing about stamps (aside from my blog, which I have kept for 7-odd years), as one of my interests is being part of making sure the hobby is still around for future generations to enjoy.
I believe one of the best ways we can "secure the future" of philately is to put stamp collecting in front of "general" audiences, as something interesting and worthwhile to collect... and hopefully some people will feel inspired to "take up tongs" and start collections.
I recently finished my first attempt at a stamp collecting article targeted at a "general audience"-- a fairly modest beginning covering a little bit about how stamps came about, along with some background on the history of stamp collecting.
It's fairly "lightweight fare," so please keep in mind-- ESPECIALLY if you're an advanced collector(!)-- that existing stamp collectors are not actually the primary intended audience; I'm writing to someone who may be "marginally aware" of stamp collecting, or who perhaps collected as a child and might feel inspired to resume the hobby.
This is still a "working" version... posted to a web site where it's in public view, but I can still edit, add, delete and modify, before a "hard" publication. My hope is to eventually write a whole group of "introductory" articles covering different aspects/angles of (introductory) stamp collecting-- and with a bit of luck get one or two published in non-philatelic magazines, print and/or online. A tough sell? Maybe... but it's worth a try, I think.
