Maybe some of our UK members know this, but as for me, I never knew that the World's Oldest Postmark dated back to 1661. Did you?

Yes wt1 and quite interesting too.

i think this is where the first Bishop marking was used and the image in the plaque appears to be just that.

That sign should say Britain's oldest postmark, not the worlds.

I may be wrong here but, yes, Egypt was ahead of anyone else for mail delivery via runners etc. However, I am not sure if Egypt had any such thing as a postmark back in BC???

Maybe we can get some enlightenment in here??

Not exactly true. The Egyptians had a mail delivery system by the year 2000 B.C. Its purpose was to link the government with military outposts throughout Egypt. The Romans were the first people to put a postmark on mail to note when it was received by the couriers.

Many purists believe the "Bishop Mark" is the first.

Interesting. My next question is, has any of these survived? Would be nice to see some of those markings.

If I was at least correct in saying that they were runners who handled the mail, can I also say that the markings are 'carrier' cancels? <G>

While we are on the topic of Bishop postmarks, information right or not, I found this book in my shelf that I bought locally from a fellow not far from here about three years ago. I bought the book as a collectible because it was published in 1938. What I also like about the book is that the original dust jacket is in great shape as well.
