These pre cancels are fun, I see why people collect them. You can group by stamp, city or state. I was trying here to get as many different cities on this stamp. I got 14 with Boston and New York duplicated but different cancels. My next project will be grouping the New York, New York together.

There is a special forum for pre-cancels. Have you had a look around it yet?

Dmilkman I do exactly what you do..i make a page by state and add the stamps by town or city..the stamps are worth nothing..just shows how easy it is to amuse us...and if I really get bored I can sort through freezer bags of stamps for postmarks...its all fun !

Yeah simple things amuse simple minds, ha ha. Seriously when I see a city on a stamp it adds something to me, puts a place to it. A date cancellation even better. A snapshot out of time.

It's fun to look for cancels from very small post offices. I've tried that off & on for years with US stamps.

Outside of the US, I have a nice collection of St. Thomas & Prince Islands, the former Portuguese colony. During colonial times as well as now, almost the entire population lives on St. Thomas. Stamps with an Ilha do Principe cancel are real hard to find. I'm fortunate to have three.

I'm still looking for a St. Thomas/Prince stamp used in the old Portuguese fort at Ouidah, in what is now Benin (St Joao de Baptiste de Ajuda). In 1921, the fort had five inhabitants. At time of annexation by newly independent Dahomey (now Benin) in 1961, the fort had 2 inhabitants. Covers from the Fort do exist as they've been written up in Portu-Info, the journal of the Intl. Society of Portuguese Philately.

Climber Steve, speaking of the Portugese area..how often do we see a cover from Funchal ? The wife and I attended a post card show a couple of months ago...the postcard dealers usually have cartons of foreign postcards and we go looking for postally used cards with decent stamps and postmarks..we look til our eyes our blurry but sometimes we get a reward !

Dear Climber Steve,

There were, in the past, several postmarks in S. Tomé e Príncipe islands post offices.
As a reference here you have 5 literature references about post offices and postmarks of S. Tomé e Príncipe islands

1930 - 11 post offices (Angolares, Caixão Grande... ... Trindade).
In Lista das Estações Postais, Telegráficas e Rádio-Telegráficas das Colónias Portuguesas [...] 1930. (Pt)

1966 - GEORGE (1896-98). Re-published - "Some Notes on Cancellations of the Portuguese Colonies".
In Portu-Info The Official Journal of International Society for Portuguese Philately, Vol. 4 Nº3 (En)

1974 - GORDON (1974). "The Post Offices of S. Tomé & Principe" in Portuguese Philatelic Society Quarterly Bulletin nº46. (En)

1975 - GORDON (1975). "S. Tomé e Principe - Some Further Notes on the Postmarks" in Portuguese Philatelic Society Quarterly Bulletin nº51. (En)

1977 - PEREIRA (1977). "Marcas Postais de S. Tomé e Príncipe" in Franquia nº32 and nº33. (Pt)
