I have gone through my Grandmother's stamp collection (started by my great grand) and have been able to find little bits of info on some stamps here & there...what would be the best way to go about selling it? There is everything from USA to Brazil to Africa to you-name-it stamps in there...all values, some put in neat little envelopes or baggies, others are loose...how does a person sort through these, or is it best to just sell as a huge lot? I have counted thousands...and have over 100 pics (some close up) of the collection. But have no idea where to go from here. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

We get this question often at SCF.

Use the Search Button and try "inherit" for a keyword.

Here is a good video to start you...

Here's a couple of links that may help:

http://www.stampsofdistinction.com/...d-stamp.html - Covers the basics on what you can do.

http://www.inheritedstampcollection.com/ - Free book of 27 chapters that covers everything you could want to know about how to continue or dispose of your collection.

Why don't collectors leave a letter or lists or receipts for their heirs ? How are people who know nothing about stamps going to liquidate them..They should have left info saying this book of stamps catalogs 4 thousand dollars and should be worth 500 dollars or something to that effect, to do less is really thoughtless !

haha I have not made any notes for my heirs (none of whom collect stamps) and I don't ever plan to. I have a few stamps that catalogue for a few thousand dollars and then a few more that catalogue for a few hundred.

My reason is that I don't like seeing values next to my stamps...I don't like remembering how much they're worth or how much I paid for them (call it a guilt trip or buyer's remorse if you will). I like collecting for the beauty of the stamp and for me monetary value takes away from the enjoyment.

Same here- Really no one interested so I don't attach values. Hopes are maybe when someone decides to go through they will appreciate what I've done and maybe decide to carry on for sentimental reasons. Reality is they will fight over them cause they know I take collecting serious and then dump them for peanuts. About the only note I may leave is my login info for SCF so possibly they can come here and meet some great folks that will verbally beat them down for trying to sell the old mans goodies!

...and if you end up being stuck with the dregs that no one else wants, your "trash" would be a welcomed treasure by the Holocaust Stamps Project at Foxborough Regional Charter School, 131 Central St., Foxboro, Massachusetts 02035.
For info about it, you can GOOGLE the Holocaust Stamps Project or check out the website: http://www.foxboroughrcs.org/studen...amp-project/

Many thanks for your consideration!

APS members can get business-card-sized cards to place in their albums, that have places to write name and APS member number. These allow a member's heirs to gain access to the volunteer APS Estate Advisory Service. I've placed said cards in the front and back of all my primary collection albums.
