The pictures aren't very good but I had to show you what I have been holding on to for 35 years. It is a real counter top general store post office used by my grandfather/postmaster in his general store right around 1890-1900. The little town is off the map now, but why has it taken me so long to realize this would be a great addition to my stamp room? It needs some minor restoration and then . . . Has anyone ever had something like this for their stamp room?

I have seen a few people set up their stamp room with a old counter or the old mailboxes. I only wish I could be so lucky. I nice cleaning and refurbish and it would go very well.

Very interesting item and lucky you for having it in the family. If you have the space in your stamp room I would say it would make a great addition to organize and store items.

Thanks for sharing.

Nick

Very Cool. I was a commercial contractor for over 25 years and the post office was one of my clients. I built or renovated nearly 30 post offices and tore down two. I have a bunch of stuff but nothing like a turn of the century counter. All the cabinets in my garage are from a post office but they are laminate, 70's style. They do still have labels that identify what was stored in some of the drawers. The coolest things I found that was post office related was some hand canceling devices in the trash and a nickel countertop vending machine that looks like a gumball machine.

That's going to be great in your stamp room. A nice piece of history.
The closest I've got it this old CNR (Canadian National Railway) pigeonhole piece (I think I've shown it on another thread)

It sits in the corner of my studio and holds magazines and other odd stuff.

I am not an expert on this, or any other kind of antique furniture.

However, I watch antique shows religiously and one theme stands out. Do NOT refurbish this unit if it is sound. Wood furniture is always valued unrestored and with its original patina.

Consult an expert before you clean it with anything other than water.

PS - Great item. I would love to have something like this in my stamp room.

Brian

You are right Rileysan - I saw an antique road show episode where someone had totally refinished an item so it was beautiful and dropped it in value $50,000 or something. My piece is missing a piece of crown molding which I have thought of going to a woodwork shop and have them duplicate it - that would do nothing to the existing piece.
