I think the "work" or "the hunt" is a lot of what appeals about stamp collecting.... at least to me.

Dressed in full head to toe stamp spotting camouflage.... hunting around in the dangerous wilds of outer ebay and Decampe... fuelled with cups of hot tea and cookies, thinking up new ways to find the next MUST HAVE item.

I really like the idea of small hard to find collections.
Regards
Gavin

Women on purple stamps! A stamp dealer I knew used to talk about this all the time, he said it was the best exhibit he ever saw in a novice / junior category.

Hi Gavin,
I think some of your ideas are quite sane compared to how unusual some peoples collections are

My favourite from this forum is 'electrical isolators' on stamps!

Yes maybe I was being to conservative ha?? :)

Years ago I remember hearing about someone who collected "lighting strikes on stamps" I think they mentioned it was a collection totalling three at that time!

Hi augustanz,

I am considering a world collection, but limited to an album double page spread per country.
The constraints in putting the collection together to be.....

That the pages aren't crammed with stamps
That the pages are properly laid out and written up
That only the best stamps that I can afford are mounted
That those stamps have an intrinsic beauty that appeals to me

All these conditions must be applied for each acquisition.

Terry

I like your thinking Terry, I like the intrinsic beauty idea, I mean why collect things we don't like to looks at?
Only the best you can afford is a good quality idea.

I would go even smaller myself and get 5 stamps per country, each one that as a story behind it that speaks to you.
I would limit myself to 5 stamps and if a better one comes along then the least favorite one must go.

It's one of the interesting things about stamp collecting that it can adapt to almost any persons way of thinking.

Neat.
Gavin

Collection of covers where the stamp has been cut to change the value.

That could get pricey real fast. I immediately think of bi-sects which, if genuine, usually have a nice premium attached. All are interesting ideas. I say Go for it! It sounds like fun to me! -Jeff

How about odd shaped stamps or just triangle stamps.
Been there done that.

Hi Gavin,

I was envisaging about between 6 to 10 stamps per page, and no sets of the same stamp design varied only by colour and value. I was prompted in this idea by other posts here on world collections and an expression in a book on the early days of stamp collecting. The author (name escapes me) described these early stamps as miniature masterpieces. Tiny works of art. I already collect very selectively so this idea was a logical next step for me. Can't wait to get on with it.

"Covers with all of the stamps applied upside down?"

Niiiiiice one.... I like your thinking!
I have a few of those in my collection but only single stamps on cover.

What about (and I BET this has been done) a collection of perforations types?? Every size and type of perforation, imperf, roulette (spelling) etc and a nice section of perforation errors??

I think that would get quite involved as a person got into the detail of it.

We are all familiar with perforations on stamps but how many of us collect the material punched out by the perforating machines?
"Chad" refers to paper fragments created when perforations are made in paper etc.
There are endless possibilities... differing gauges will have differing sizes of "chads" punched out.

USA collectors can swap Schermack rectangular "chads" with Portuguese crosses "chads".
Of course Bosnia and Herzegovina collectors would be in the elite as their pictorial definitives of 1906 are well known for their multiple compound perforations...each side of the stamp has a different perforation!! FOUR sizes of "chad" to collect.

Right...I'm off to look for some "hanging chads" on my stamps. The removal of those will not only enhance the stamp but has given me a new collecting theme! Anyway, it's time for my medication.

I like the idea Terry. Let me know what you decide to pick from New Zealand and I will do my best to help you get them.
