I believe the one with the MX at the back has a 3 to denote its from plate 3. Based on Chip's post: 1. Lines above Two Pence 2. MX Will be most certainly plate 3. Plate 4 also had a few stamps with MX but those are very very rare. So it would be safe to consider this a plate 3. Having said that, the one with the 8 also has a 3 at the back? lol..There is a chance it could be from plate 3 as well as plate 3 had both types of cancels. Check out this link for better info, don't take my opinion seriously but I am pretty sure that the one with the MX is a plate 3. http://www.maltesex.com/plating/And this link is Chips Blog which also gives information on the 2P Blue. http://victoria.cgpostal.com/ |

Let's try that again: Lines + MX = Plate 3 Lines + numeral = Plate 3 or Plate 4. You have to look at the position of the letters within the lower boxes and other markings on the stamp to determine whether a 2d with lines and a numeral cancellation is plate 3 or 4. In this case, no reason to assume it's not plate 3. Either way, there is no difference in value between numeral-cancelled plate 3s and plate 4s.

Makes sense. (I didn't expect the plate No. to be marked on back of the stamp.)
I reloaded the images to display them correctly.
Thank you. |

Art I didn't mean that the plate number was marked at the back as a print procedure but more an effort from a previous collector.
Anyway, I'm envious of you for having both, I have a new obsession for these pennies :D ,and since I cant afford to splurge on a Penny Black, the two penny blue grabs my attention. |

Mindpsyche: re the plate no. markings, I got it.
Since the bulk of my inventory was previously owned by a dealer, most of the identification/markings, where they exist, are pretty likely to be accurate. My understanding/interpretation, not so much. Besides, I'd rather be lucky than good. |

Ok, so I picked up another one about an hour ago on ebay for $ 15.00 I think it was a good deal considering all 4 margins are present and the seller claims it has a MX. Although, I already bought it, I would like a few other opinions on the MX. Thanks. |

Your Plate 3 Two Pence Blue has great margins and can be considered a bargain at $15. Only the messed up MX prevents your stamp being "worth" more but is is still a very attractive example and would sell for at least 30 pounds or more in the UK. The margins, the blue of the paper, the clear check letters and general clean condition make it a pretty decent stamp. |

Yeah Scotzm, I too had the same opinion. The only drawback with this stamp is that the MX appears to be a smudge but other than that its a beautiful stamp with clear margins. When I saw this going for $ 15.00 I just clicked buy :)

All of the twopence blue stamps that you have posted here will have the plate numbers printed in the scrollwork at the sides. Only a better scan of each stamp would help viewers of your stamps to identify and assess worth. |

The dealer price for these generally ranges between £3 and £7 in good, used condition. Plate 12 is the most desirable in money terms - up to about £25. Then deduct a decent % for a real world price. Also worth checking for inverted watermarks. |

As GeoffHa says...condition is everything. You could , in theory, sell most of these for around £1.50 to £2 each with the exception of plate 12 which might be worth £6 to £8 due to condition issues with most of the stamps. |
