Hi,
I've been buying US stamps on ebay for some time and filling out the early years of the collection with those that are most affordable. One of the stamps I needed was the #424 - one cent green Washington. I saw a auction with a pic of a "mint" sample, and did a buy it now for $1.50.

The stamp arrived yesterday, and it was cancelled! I went back to the listing and the verbiage touted a used stamp, but the pic was of a mint stamp.

So then I thought, there are so many versions of this stamp I will check the perferations. Well, the 424 is a 10 count, but this stamp was a 12 count. Of course this meant I had a #405, rather than a #424. As I didn't have that stamp, I will keep it.

Well, this just reinforced that we need to "read the fine print" before we buy, and check the item carefully after we do.

Oh, I did contact the seller ( ebay newbie) and advise..........

So you bought a scott #405- 1 cent, perf 10 green Washington, catalog value of 25˘, used for $1.50 and allowed the seller to get away with falsifying an advert. Caveat emptor (Latin for "Let the buyer beware") Even though it was your responsibility to read the description the picture/image was false and should be brought to the seller's attention and even then you still didn't get what you paid for! I wouldn't use that seller anymore and make sure you got at the least a partial refund!

Yup, I did that..................

I've been a regular on ebay since 2000, and have well over 1k 100 percent positive feedbacks as both a buyer and seller. My point is, I'm an old timer on ebay and know my way around. Soooo, I kick myself in the butt for not reading the verbiage of the auction. I just went by the picture alone. In my opinion, this new seller was not intentionally trying to rip someone off, and I certainly did "educate" him.

As the ol saying goes............... NEVER A S S you M E !

mobilman44 occasionally I will misread an ebay listing and I too figure it is my own fault. Generally it happens when I have had one too many cups of fine wine, you know, the kind that comes in a box. yakboomer.

An Aussie invented the wine cask!

There are some very nice wines in those boxes.

They never get opened up to go off by the atmosphere.

There is the Aussie stamp.
