This afternoon my wife and I visited a consignment shop in a neighboring town. Just as we decided to leave, I saw up on a back shelf half obscured by some magazines ... two 1955 H.E. Harris "The Discoverer Stamp Album", and a mid-seventies H.E. Harris United States Liberty album. The two Discoverer albums have maybe 200-300 world wide stamps in each, and the Liberty album has a few from the 1800's and almost complete mostly commem's, mostly cancelled from the 1920's through the 1970's. I really could not find a clear asking price on them, so took them to the clerk at the counter. After talking with him, he said he wanted to sell to a collector versus a reseller. I was able to get them for the grand sum of $20.00!
I decided to start examining the contents starting with the revenues. which I have shown maybe 75% below. Since I am just starting to examine them, I cannot comment on what is there - yes I know that some are in pretty bad shape, and yes - I see the non-revenue amongst them (do you see it?). Also in the album is a set of 10 of what I believe are 12 Confederate States of America "Altered Plate facsimiles".
Thats the same stamp album my Dad purchased for me as a birthday gift ,that made me a "big kid" collector . From that day on I was in the big league of stamp collectors [I was 12 years old ].Nice buy with some nice stamps .
I've been buying albums off of ebay and going thru a similar process. Fortunately most of the stamps I've dealt with were applied with peelable hinges (probably Dennison). But some have needed extensive soaking and "help" to get tape like hinges removed. Thankfully, I'm finished with that.
Anyway, you just never know what you will find, and we both know the "hunt" is an enjoyable part of the experience.
$20 is a great deal... The nostalgia value alone far exceeds the price. And good on the seller for marking this for a collector rather than a reseller.
