Just acquired this Mexico Scott C74 at the Rumsey auction at WESTPEX. 300 of these were issued in 1935 when Amelia Earhart visited Mexico and about a third were used on the mails carried by Amelia Earhart on her solo flight from Mexico City to Newark, NJ. The used examples are much rarer than the mint or unused ones.

Excellent. I love the Earhart items and am always looking for an envelope addressed to Grandma. She was her roommate for a year in college -- at least that is what she told me. If anyone finds one addressed to a "Lewis", please let me know.

(Corrected last name)

I found this short summary of her education:

"Earhart graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1916......She began junior college at Ogontz School in Rydal, Pennsylvania but did not complete her program."

Their records and photo archives would surely disclose the facts.

Doug2222. I just sent an inquiry to the Ogontz School (now part of Penn State). We'll see what comes back. Thanks for the quick research.

Very nice stamp alright.

Unfortunately, Mexico is a country I had to drop some years ago to down-size my collection in order to centralize more on the few countries I had more specialized in.

Glad you were able to get that one.

I just heard back from Ogontz (now Penn State), and it appears that my Grandmother was actually a student there at the same time as Amelia. We haven't yet been able to confirm whether they were roommates or not.

Fun stuff from back then (1916-1919). Grandma was voted "Most Artistic" and got an "Honorable Mention in Neatness". More interesting things will be posted as they arrive.

What was your grandmother's name? Posting it at this point surely couldn't hurt...

There's an Amelia Earhart in TV news in Denver. Turns out she is a descendant.

Grandma was "Elizabeth Lewis", a student there from 1916 to 1919. Once I figure out how to crop some of the information from the yearbook, I'll post it. Quite interesting the awards that were presented during the Great War (World War 1).

A really nice acquisition, and at what I would consider a fair price because of the rarity. If only all stamps were so well centered, and with such a great cancel.
