Here's an entertaining read for which I never heard the story before.

According to this blog, the Poultry Industry Stamp (Scott 968) was considered the least necessary stamp of its day and resulted in action being taken that led up to the creation of the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) to recommend to the Postmaster General proposals for new US stamp issues.

Does anyone know if this is really a true story? If so, it represents an interesting bit of postal trivia.

P.S. By the way, I never really looked at the stamp that close (until now) to realize that the denomination is printed within the outline of an egg!

I don't know if the story is true or not, but to me it seems like only about 10 or 12 of the 30 were really significant and worth issuing. Of course some of the extras were automatically issued, like the various statehood stamps.

Seems like everything is politicized today? ...Well it was politicized back in those days too...

I sincerely doubt it. After-all it's a tribute to the American poultry farmer (and commerce) and one of my favorite issues from that time frame. It would take a lot of convincing for me to believe that.

This is one of my favorite stamps from this era. It took me a long time to get a MNH and I love it! I call it the chicken stamp and just marvel at the detail on the chicken...A real beauty.
I think the CSAC is a good idea, but they don't always decide on the best stamp issue. This has been discussed in other threads regarding the least popular, necessary, attractive. In their defense, they have also decided on some other of my favorites like Marilyn, James Dean, the new La Florida, and more.
