Here's a picture of a post office in a real resort community -- Big Sky, Montana:

What I found particularly interesting is that there is a recent news article about budget allocations for this resort, that included the following comments about the above post office, which is apparently a Contract Post Office,
that receives funding from the US Postal Service to the tune of $255,000 regardless of the income generated by that location. Undoubtedly it's a remote location and seasonal resort, but more than a quarter of a million dollars is received from the USPS,
regardless of the income they generate and they anticipate requesting a funding increase this summer?
I don't know much about how CPO's operate but doesn't this seems like quite an expensive proposition for the financially troubled US Postal Service?
Quote:
The Big Sky Post Office, LLC – Big Sky Post Office – $36,500.
The Post Office, LLC (POLLC) was created in 2001 to operate the Post Office Contract Station in Big Sky. Before the creation of the LLC the Post Office Contract Station was operated by the Big Sky Owners Association who applied and received resort tax funding to help supplement operating costs.
Unlike communities like West Yellowstone and Gallatin Gateway, whose Post Offices are run by the United States Postal Service (USPS), POLLC handles Post Office operations in Big Sky. It's compensated $255,000 per year by the USPS regardless of the amount of money the office generates.
The Big Sky Post Office will be requesting a contract rate increase from the USPS this summer. If the request is granted, the amount of the increase would [be] reduced from the amount of resort tax requested.
For the past nine years POLLC has applied and received resort tax funding. Last year it requested and received $35,500. This year 14 percent of the Big Sky Post Office's budget is being requested in resort tax funding.
