So I came across this on ebay, and I felt like sharing with you all. http://www.ebay.com/itm/EXCEPTIONAL...em5d3f1366f7

It's basically a collection from a gentleman that passed away pre 1980 as per the description. It's for sale for right around the $1000 mark, but after adding up some of the values of the Columbians, Trans Mississippis, Pan American, White Plains Sheet, and used #64, the CV came up to $3755 provided that they're all HINGED, which I don't even know if they are or not as it isn't stated, except for the White Plains which is said to be MNH. That CV can be much higher if they're all MNH.

Anyway, I have most of these so I won't be bidding, but I think it's a steal for anyone who doesn't have them, or wants to turn them around for a profit by individually selling the stamps that are worth it.

Have a good one.
CF

I've been watching that one since he put it up. I think the CV is above $5k. When I emailed him a few days ago he had 17 watchers. I can't figure out why no one has jumped on it yet.

My guess is that everyone is watching with the thought that they are the only ones and that they will jump in at the end and steal it. I see that happen quite often with better lots like that.

My guess is that they are obviously hinged, the overall centering is not especially good, several stamps are clearly somewhat less than fresh, and no one knows what the backs look like. Even if there is $5000 cat, at most it's not worth more than 15% of catalog.

The pictures are suspect. I never liked a full page scan without any close ups.

Here is a translation of the listing for you.

They say:

Quote:
WE PRICE EVERYTHING TO SELL

They mean:
Buy now!

They say

Quote:
There is so much to communicate about this collection, so let me start with a personal note. The collector was Dentist and an avid Philatelist.

They mean:
We would rather talk about fluff than about the stamps
They say:

Quote:
While we tend to be rather critical and conservative in our appraisal of condition, we feel the pages are an 'A+' and the 2-post binder an 'A+' for soundness, cleanliness and freshness.

They mean:
We will grade the album pages and binder for you, so you might think the same about the stamps.
They say:

Quote:
Likely the Best Looking Kansas-Nebraska Set we have ever seen.

They mean:
Likely the best we can say about these stamps is something ridiculously ambiguous for stamps that are often forged.
They say:

Quote:
I would suggest that the Buyer of this Estate consider getting some of these stamps Graded. Remember that at the time of this Collector's passing, there was no grading being done for stamps.

They mean: These stamps really should be expertised, but someone else should pay the price and take the risk of finding out if some of these are not good stamps.

Of course, I am really just affirming what 1847bill has already said.

I don't know the seller but am interested in the book. It is a chore to sell large books and requires a lot of work. When you look at NY Stamps they take a lot of pictures. Others give up after a few. If you want people to bid and buy you have to be complete and show at least the better ones close up and also the gum. Like you said there are plenty of fake overprints on the Kansas and Nebraska. At least say what type of gum breakers it has.
