Hi, I have a stamp, apparently for the Suez Canal. It is standard definitive size, on a horizontal plane. The image is a sailing/steam vessel surrounded by an ovel double ring with "Canal Maritine De Suez" written in it. It is a pale blue on white, probably from the late 1800s or early 1900s, and the denomination is 5 "cents".
Of course Suez Canal is not a country, so this stamp must be attached to a country of a different name.
As always, your help is appreciated and invaluable! Mobilman44
It's not there; it's a local. Four denominations are listed in Gibbons, after Egypt. They are worth far more (genuinely) used than mint. MANY counterfeits exist. Way too much background (in Gibbons) to copy here.
They were first issued July 6, 1868 and were withdrawn from use on August 16, 1868 - and demonetized August 31. Proper name of the enterprise is "The Suez Canal Company."
In the Scott Classic Catalogue, at least, the Suez Canal Company stamps are listed in the local stamps section near the end of Egypt. Scott assigns the numbers L1-L4. The 5c green (!) is L2 and was valued in the 2013 catalog as $100 unused, $575 used. As others have said, "many forgeries exist of the stamp..., including excellent counterfeits created from the genuine plate of the 40c value, stolen from the company's archive."
My copies of the "Brown" Internationals are temporarily boxed up, but I think that the locals are in at least the Browns published in the 1800s and perhaps also the "19th Century Edition" volume published later. But, as you say, the locals aren't in the Blue Volume I.
OK, that explains it. It was in one of the Part 1 Big Blues I picked up off of ebay. It is the 5 cent stamp and of course light green (rather than the blue) I originally posted. This one appears to be genuine, but I can't say for sure.
