The albums are the type where it has a facsimile of each stamp in B/W and goes up to 1960in one ,I did a catalogue value in 2004 with S.Gibbons catalogue and both albums came to about 8000 brit pounds.I also bought in the same shop a collection of covers ,mostly Zeppelin ones!

Just Germany, or does it include German States? German States (and Italian States) are a bit of a mine field.

Brownknees ----Sounds like you got something a little better than what normally shows up on ebay. I think you should take that collection with you to the U.K. and have someone like Vincent at Sandafayre Stamp Auctions look at it and offer you advice or a offer to buy . He was in the U.S. a few years ago where I met him and he knew the world stamp market and shown he was a person you can get a fair deal.

I would not use ebay for something potentially worth this much.
I do not know the UK, but I would second the suggestion of Sandafayre (I don't know them, but buy from them).

Alternatively, I know a few auction houses in the U.S (NY and LA) and have used them to sell massive collections which I inherited.
Let me know if you want their names (and these days, if you color scan all the pages (time consuming but still), they auction houses provide a general estimate of value).

I agree that Sandafayre is your best bet.

They do frustrate the heck out of me from a buyer's perspective with their extremely sparse lot descriptions. It is hard to know whether the lot is worth the asking price. People do buy from them reguarly, though.

I have been on the Sandafayre mailing list for some years and get all the new listings of Flags and Cinderellas. But I find them too expensive and have rarely purchased.
However, they are an A1 firm and are great to deal with and talk to. I find it hard to believe they would offer such an amount without reason...or did they give a reason? What did they say about the condition of the stamps ? Did they offer any advice ?
I met the team at London 2010 and they were very helpful. They even let me 'borrow' one of their prized possessions, an inflation-era cover, one of the worlds tallest !

Can we see some scans or pics of what are in the albums ?
