Admittedly, I don't mail stuff much anymore...except online. (I know, don't yell...)
But this has me confused. This came to me through the mail, but I don't see any cancellation on the stamps.
Can you enlighten me?
Thanks!
Rox

Unfortunately, it is not unusual these days.

Every postal employee I have talked to in the past say that the stamps have to be cancelled. However, I have received many pieces of mail un-cancelled like yourself. For me personally, the countries that are worse at fault are Canada, US, GB and Australia.

So, to sum up, you are not alone.

My guess is that package went into a mailbox and was not presented to a postal clerk at a post office window. If it had been, I suspect they would have postmarked the stamps right there. Sometimes it's just not worth the effort in the mailstream to apply postmarks on odd sized and thicker parcels since they have to be applied manually rather than with automated cancelling equipment.

Further, had the envelope been presented to a post office window clerk, I suspect the postage rate would have been a lot higher than the $0.92 shown because technically the bubble mailers (depending on weight and thickness) would be designated as a "package" rather than a first class "envelope".

At least these stamps weren't defaced with a black marker which is the cancel of last resort, if it was noticed by the post office that all other cancelers failed to cancel them before which would make the stamps uncollectible.

No need for confusion. Welcome to 21st century mail processing.

Postal administrations across the planet have turned to machines to process mail. Your package was delivered. That was what was supposed to happen. It was necessary however that a destination bar code be affixed to the envelope, and it was:

[

The white strip and black lines are the significant postal history elements on this mailing.

From the perspective of a stamp collector the lack of cancellation on the stamps can be disappointment. Perhaps others might want to share with us the kinds of postal markings used to obliterate stamps on packages to see what you might be missing.

The Post Office does not handle mail the way it did fifty years ago with an army of postal workers manually cancelling and sorting mail. Letters and parcels now have strange markings to allow the post office to deliver the mail.

Doesn't this just open up the possibility of stamps being re-used?

spain 1850 makes a good point. Isn't that the point of cancelling the stamps?

I am wondering if cancelling stamps is even necessary anymore. You can't soak stamps anymore and peeling them of one envelope makes a mess of the stamp. Remember the 10 cent christmas precancel. Maybe the post office is working on a system to eliminate cancelling stamps. What do you all think of that possibility? Would it save the post office a significant amount of money to not cancel stamps?

Common as dirt, I would guestimate that 75% of covers that I receive are uncancelled.Just got one yesterday from NY Stamps ebay purchase, glue stick eligible.

I detect a fiendish postal plot.
If the stamps are unsoakable, unremovable, unreuseable...why bother cancelling them!
I often get mail with stamps that have not been cancelled (but they are usually the three "u"s). I always ask my local PO to hand cancel my mail. Someday this person might be out of a job!
And what about all the glue stick manufacturers and their employees!
Let's start a campaign and ask to have all of our mail hand cancelled...

You are all a kick! I like Kathy's reply about the fiendish postal plot! I was going to ask about this at the post office this morning but there were 10 people behind me in line and a stamp collector at the other window! Oh no! Next time...

Well, folks...there was such a thing as "pre-cancels" at one time. That was alsosupposed to save the P.O. a lot of time.
