Hi!
I'm in the process of identifying worldwide stamps as to dates and type. I've got all the countries lined up, so that is not a problem.

It seems that several so far are various BOB stamps that are not listed in my 6 volume 2003 Scott catalog.

Would the Scott's Classic catalog (1840-1940)have more BOB info - like excise stamps, transfers, customs, etc.?

If not, is there anything out there that would help?

Thank you,
Mobilman44

In general, Scott Vol 1-6 only shows non US adhesive stamps that had postal uses, so revenues that were or became valid for postage will be included, but the catalogs are usually only postage, air mail, postage due, special delivery, newspapers, etc. Some countries have postal tax stamps or registry adhesives that will be included, but no revenues, postal stationary, telegraphs (unless valid for postage), etc.

Not those categories.

There is a world revenue catalog up to 1915 called Forbin; there are reprints available. There are no later world revenue catalogs, although there are many country catalogs out. Also some more complete areas such as British Empire.

Thank you! Not the answers I wanted to hear, but you saved me the cost of the Classic Catalog.

mobilman44,
The classic catalog is a great book. It covers values on cover and gets deeper into varieties and even cancellations on some. It is packed with great info and one of my most referenced books. If I had to keep only two books it would be the World Classic and the US Specialized. You don't have to pay the big money. I get mine when they are a couple years old and save a ton. Right now my specialized is a 2011 and my World classic is 2009. I can usually sell my old ones for about what I find the newer ones for if I am patient.
The Forbin book is over 600 pages. I have it on CD and a print copy. It is ok for indentifying stamps, but the illustrations are drawings and not actual photos of the stamps. The pricing is almost 100 years old.
I use Barefoot for Uk and Unitrade for Canada. They are pretty good. I have another one for Canada that gets a little deeper into revenues, but I forgot the name. I have other reference books for other countries, but they are way out of date.
I have posted in this forum and always get great response from people a lot more knowledgable than I am. My WW Rev's beyond US, UK and Canada are not very complete and the books would cost more than the value of the stamps.
....and don't forget Al Gore's invention,(the interweb), I just had my computer repaired and I saved over 400 links that I use in my research on postal history and stamps.

Thanks PJS!
What I've found is that some of the stamps I can't identify (other than just the country of issue) is that there are stamps that are various BOB issues, but one can't readily tell just by looking at them. I've queried this forum a few times, and always got an answer - and man do I appreciate it.
I'm fairly sure I'll pick up a Scotts Classic, and of course will get it off ebay, one probably a few years old.
Thanks again,
Mobilman44
