Well, Pagoda, you're right there!

What I mean is, I know now that Scott is the only source for this 'salmon' shade and I've been able to see a scan of it. The rest is still a mystery.

I went back and read this entire thread to see what has been learned, and I think the discussion went a little sideways early on, but the end result doesn't necessarily change.

Scott puts the salmon shade on the watermark V and crown (which is T33 in SG), rather than crown over double-lined A (T34 in SG). There was an early reference in this thread to crown over double-lined A, and the Gibbons and Robson Lowe discussions built off of that reference.

SG only lists carmine-rose on the V and crown watermark.

cjd,

checking the Western Australia Study Group references for 1d. V Crown watermark.

Bright Rose Red (range) upright watermark, October 1902
Bright Rose Red (range) sideways watermark, January 1903

comb. 12 1/2 x 12, line perf. 11.

Reddish Pink (range) sideways watermark, May 1903
Reddish Pink (range) upright watermark, late 1904

comb. 12 1/2 x 12, line perf. 11

Pale Pink, sideways watermark, June 1904
Pale Pink, upright watermark, June 1904

comb. 12 1/2 x 12, line perf. 11

It mentions in notes that shade progression from Dark to Pale whilst the Crown A has a shade progression from Pale to Dark.

Still no Salmon in sight, presumably Pale Pink equates with it,

Pagoda.

Oh, so nothing about a line perf 12.4? I've got one of those on the 1d Swan and several 2d yellow.

According to the handbook there were

Line 12 1/2
Line 11
Comb 12 1/2 x 12 (horizontal format)
Comb 12 x 11/2 (vertical format)

Line 12 1/2 (actual 12.4) from 1876 with large holes
another machine same gauge with small holes from 1902.

The book mentions the various stamps which used that gauge.

Line 11, 2 machines from 1902, one small holes, the other larger blunt teeth.

Comb 12 1/2 x 12, 2 machines in 1901 (actually 12.4 x 11), 2 new machines in 1909 (11.8 x 11.5)

It is a complicated issue re. perfs., I suggest you get hold of the literature and not rely on any catalogues which are only basic.

I do not collect WA but have the book and also the other reference books by Mogens Juhl but can't locate them.

There is a society which specialises in WA, The Western Australian Study Group,

http://www.wastudygroup.com/

They produce a fine magazine on WA, The Black Swan, you should contemplate joining,

Thanks for the information, Pagoda!

BTW I'm not particularly interested in WA stamps, per se. I just ended up with a large box of them because the seller stated that they might be good for those looking for postmarks. As it happened, they weren't (there wasn't a desirable one in the whole lot). However, the lack of good postmarks did force me to study them from other points of view. It's turned out to be more interesting, and a bit more complex, than I anticipated.

Jimjam.

at least it proves (sort of) that it is about time that the catalogues, both Gibbons and Scott's redo their listings in unison with specialist references. As usual they are very good for the classics but for the middle issues they are lacking,
