Enjoyed reading the ugliest stamp thread - a subject that has come up here and elsewhere of course a few times ----------

Here's one for you: bizarre contrasts in Canadians stamp issues. This may take a little more head scratching.

I'll open with the 2005 Alberta and Saskatchewan centennial stamps. Saskatchewan features people and fun, while Alberta shows equally......buildings, industry and rocks.

I don't have the stamps but here they are
from Canada Post Archives site.

I agree the Saskatchewan looks a lot sexier.

Maybe they have more fun in that province.

But I wouldn't know , I've never been there.

Intriguing topic - requires some thought.....

Confederation is celebrated 3 times (ON / QC / NB / NS)

and SK / AB 3 times:

(I'm glad that Saskatchewan girl has tossed her bonnet!)
BC 2 times:

MN / PE 1 time:

and then NF joined in 1949:

Can you guess what Canada Post offered as its celebration of Newfoundland's 50th Anniversary?

(reply to Gilles le T: almost nothing!)

Inasmuch as there has not been an overwhelming response to my provocative question above, I shall reveal the answer.
I understand that the post office cited this stamp #1783 (1999):

as their philatelic acknowledgement of Newfoundland's 50th anniversary.
One of the twelve provincial highways issues. Pretty lame.

sak - well they couldn't very well do do the Home Hardware, TD or Eaton's stamps and Newfoundland too. C'mon.

I'm still waiting after 5 years for an email from Mr Phillips (Canada Post, Director, Philatelic Services) explaining
why no stamp was issued to commemorate the 250th Anniverserry
of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham aka Battle of Quebec.

I was sent a standard email by one of his flunkies that
great care is taken in choosing appropriate subjects to put
on Canadian stamps.

Not relevant to Canadian history ? Have you seen some of the
stamps issued in the last few years?
For instance what does Wallenberg have to do with Canadian history?

Our politicians and higher up civil servants* are totally
gutless and only pander to minorities for votes.
Why else run the Chinese New Year cycle for the second
time, the first time was too much.

* CanadaStamp, I was going to say MANDARIN here but
I remember you objected to the term awhile back.

What is 1785 referring to?

The date? The Canada Scott number?

Canada Scott/Unitrade 1785

What part of the stamp do you have a problem with?

The design or the the theme?

I was referring to the (theme) recent demographic survey indicated that Newfoundland population is expected to diminish as it has low birth rate and is getting older faster than rest of Canada...No offence to my friends from the Rock...just repeating the stats report

Ok thanks Gilles.

Yes we are all getting old and the problem of an aging
population isn't just Newfoundland and even Canada but most
of Western Nations.

I dont know about your statistics but in this report from
the government Employment and Social Development Canada
www.hrsdc.gc.ca

as of 2011, Nova Scotia heads the list of over 65.
Newfoundland and Quebec are neck in neck at 15.8% and 15.7%
respectively.

Newfoundland is projected to have the highest percent of over 65
by 2036 but a lot can happen between now and then.

Nfld is a "have" province and the young ex-pat workers - to a large degree - intend to return home just as soon as they can draw a pension. Two facts that will mitigate - to a large extent - the demographic being experienced in NB and NS.
